You just saved me €3000!! My idiot mechanic said that it’s the head gasket or the head gasket seal. Thank you so much! I will fix this and then update

I have an early model 04 6.0.
>250000 miles
Bulletproofed.
I had white smoke and coolant leaking from the exhaust. (launched >12' @=>3000 rpm)
I used an old dgas cap, clear hose/clear bottle for the bubble test.
Bubbled fairly vigorously, stopping when I unplugged the egr valve. Did not start again when it was plugged back in, or for the next few minutes.
Egr cooler failure, not head gasket, right?
I pulled everything to get the cooler out for replacement and found a dummy cooler. Plugged at both ends. Coolant seems to have flowed through freely, but never exhaust.
Egr valve was steam cleaned, with considerable damage to one of the o rings, but otherwise looks surprisingly good.
I have broken bolts in the rear end of the exhaust manifold, and visible leaking from the point where the bolt broke on the driver's side.
This is my first diesel.
Without tearing more apart, how can I locate the leak?

Thanks for explaining this.  I was worried what was causing these symptoms.

If the egr cooler has gone bad for quite some time now, will it also cause a blown head gasket?

@machiavelli316bg black smoke is un-burned fuel which means ur engine is not geting enough air. or in sum chases its normal. it just depends on how much black smoke is produced

I have pressure (bubbles in coolant system) when engine is hot. But I don't have white smoke from exhaust on first start or anytime in long drive. It is losing water little bit from cooling system. What can be problem? My car is 2.0 TDI 16v

oil filter with a cooler inside ... right ... , it is egr valve

I don't have white smoke out of the tail pipe and i'm not overheating. I'm getting a lot of pressure in the cooling system. Truck runs cold. Has no heat and then after about 5 miles, it finally starts to rise. It sits at 210 for a few seconds, the heat comes on and then up almost to overheat and then back down to about 120. Then I get the "low coolant" warning. Antifreeze is coming out of the reservoir and all over the side of the truck. I've replaced the thermostats. It changed NOTHING. I replaced the radiator cap and it was perfect for about a day and it built pressure worse than before.

I'm at a loss...

P.S.

I originally thought it was the water pump because there was a leak coming from, what I THOUGHT was the weep hole. But it's higher than that.

I think this is exactly what's happening on my '20 Duramax. The dealer destroyed my engine and replaced it roughly 30k miles ago, now it's losing coolant and throwing a P20EE code.

@jorjohns2012
blue smoke means that you burn oil

Can a egr cooler internal leak cause a sign on the dashboard saying engine overheated. Turn off now?
