All photos in this video were taken with the Sony RX1 R II (unless otherwise noted).

Despite this cameras age it still sells for $3300 on B&H. The Sony RX1 R mk2. I’ve been using it literally every single day for over a year now. I think i am qualified to talk realistically & honestly about both the pros & the cons of this little tool. I always have it with me every time i walk out the door. And i’ve even used it on paid jobs. Let’s start with the things I love about this specific camera...

Sold my X100V and picked this up the end of last year. Best decision ever! I'm thrilled with this little gem. Really wish a version 3 appears. I take this with my RX100 M7 and that's a perfect small and lightweight travel setup.

Regarding the placement of the video record button: menu/settings/6/Movie Button, select Movie Mode Only. This will disable the movie button while in all still shooting modes. No more accidental video recordings. The video record button will only activate once the menu dial wheel has been turned to Movie Mode. There’s one more “con” to be removed from your list! Love my little camera. I’ll love it even more once I get my recently dead pop-up viewfinder repaired…

Many years ago i bought an rx1r in a new condition. After a while i sold all my gear. I had many many cameras, nikon dxs, sony a7's rx100's rx10's, fuji x100's, xt-20 etc lenses etc. My only gear for the last years is this rx1 (and samsung ultra series smartphones). Rx1 with the zeiss is just a masterpiece and kills at photography most of new tech combos. I still remember some tests many years ago with my last x100iv and the differences where as night and day. Rx1r2 is an upgraded version of mark1 (evf, phase detection etc) and cannot be competed even 10 years after it's production.

I've used the RX1 for for over 10 years (not the rx1r2). It's slow now, but I still love it. Been waiting all this time for the next one.

This kind of format of a video is superb. Straight to the point and very detailed. I just discovered your channel and I'm subscribing. RX1Rii is my dream camera. i can only watch people use it

In the comment section seems we are having a little rx1m2 party here!
I think your last point about the love hate duality really hits home. This little camera, oddly enough, has grown on me through the years. Have been using mirrorless models for many years and none of them really left me with a special impression, they are just tools after all. Whereas m2 always gives me that urge to go out and explore the world with my eyes wide open.

Yes it is... it's an incredibly versatile camera. Right about some of the cons, but the pros do outweigh the negatives

I own one and it’s a brilliant camera and I’ll never part with it. I’ve never once accidentally hit the record button and actually find it perfectly placed. Anyway, best FF compact ever made. It’s built beautifully and the images are so professional it’s hard to truly believe they come out of this thing.

It’s my main camera since 2019. Can’t believe Leica just came out with a worthy competitor eight years later and it’s still not as compact and stealth. In fact, I just bought a second one while they are still available new on B&H, because I’m afraid SONY has given up on niche market with fixed lens cameras now that they just rolled out A7CR, for which I can totally empathize what you said in this video. So, trust me, you are not the only guy totally sold to this Eight year old camera here. 😊

I've bought the first version of rx1 and I am still amazed of the sharpness and quality of photos taken from this camera. I will never sell mine.

Thanks for these videos. 🙏 After 50+ years of photography I somehow ended up with this camera. Sold everything else. Even the A7cR. Trying to get some passion back after retiring from fashion and beauty. I’m not much of a street and landscape guy but I would really like to dive deeper into the settings on this camera, like the HDR and DRO levels, etc. Plus some of the other settings that would matter shooting in RAW. The point being is to not have to think about the settings on location. So maybe a memory strategy for street, landscape, portrait. I did find some settings to mimic Canon color using the night scene but really in raw it just gave me a starting point. Even after 50+ years, I always have so much to learn.

I highly recommend getting the Metro Case grip. The makers are out of Austin Tx. It encases the camera perfectly and is super light and stealth. It’s made from matte black nylon 12 which is like some space light materialI. It doesn’t feel or look like nylon. I had one for my RX1 and will be receiving another for my RX1RII. I got some beautiful pics out of the RI, but the RIIs focusing is the winner for me. Great to see you share your thoughts. Keep it! I also have a Fuji xt50 and it’s lighter than that! Unbeatable for the compact size and weight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Just bought one, used from a local photo store here in Norway. Can't wait for it to get shipped!

You can save a few millimetres in depth by using a Hoya rubber lens hood rather than the Sony (work-of-art, perforated) hood - just flip it inside-out when it's not needed.
12:43 I use an aftermarket grip which has a chunky hold for the RH and a baseplate which slots into the top of a tripod - such is the reality of shooting in my eighth decade. Frankly, if Sony had copied it they would have had somewhere to put a *decent battery* !
I must recommend the aftermarket user guide by Alexander White - it is more in-depth than the manufacturer's offering (Marianas Trench versus puddle).

I’ve had the camera collecting dust for years. I loved it so much but the nonstop battery changes drove me insane. Five batteries in a night. And many missed shots because of it. Also missed tons of shots bc of that dang record button. I will try changing settings. I loved the camera for its great lowlight shooting.
I have a Leica Q2 and the A7Rv but the Leica is broken and the RV is super heavy. I was thinking of selling it for the A7CR, but everyone complains about the low resolution of the viewfinder. Now that you are saying it’s the same as in the M2, I am going to get mine out tonight and see if it’s acceptable enough after using the RV. I really miss having compact.
Idk how you cope with the batteries on this thing. Otherwise I totally agree with you. It’s the reason I have not been able to just let it go even though haven’t used for years.

I bought mine 3 years ago used from a retailer for £1470.

Boxed, mint with lens, and eyepiece hoods, a set of filters, and a Fotodiox Pro hand grip.

I also bought a used, boxed Sony FDA-EV1MK viewfinder.

The only downside is the small capacity battery.

You should get the Newmowa 3x battery charger. Reliable, compact and charges via USB-C.

If Sony released a Rx1r III it would end much of this x100vi scalper nonsense. Hopefully at a more competitive affordable cost than II’s msrp. The Leica Q3 would be fantastic but that price is very high end.

Thanks for the review...I'm still on the fence about this camera. GAS is always there. I've used an M10-P extensively and it's definitely louder than a leaf shutter but quieter than almost any mechanical shutter I've ever used besides one of my Olympus cameras.

Great video Justin! Been on the fence about this one for a while, especially with the release of the A7CR but man the lack of any sort of weather sealing hurts since I want to take it everywhere for traveling and use it in the not most ideal weather environments haha, guess it's definitely not that type of camera.

It wouldn't be too bad if it wasn't so expensive but the set photographer angle might just push me over the edge and use it alongside another weather sealed compact camera for traveling. And while I agree it might feel a bit limited to have a fixed lens, as of late I just want to get a camera that's mostly complete and ready to use without anything beyond the basics and the RX1R II hits the spot well despite the downsides, thankfully I'm in no hurry to get it yet haha
