Off grid and loving it. Wish I could have done it sooner. Bad point, I am headed outside right now to clean snow off my panels, lol.

I was going to get rooftop solar panels, but decided against it after discoverying these two things contractors never tell you:
1. Some insurance companies will increase your rates - fire risk increased, and value added to house
2. Inverters typically last 10 - 15 years, replacement costs labour + parts about $5000. Add that to the overall cost when calculating ROI

When I spoke with the utility, they said those of us who are already in the system are grandfathered. It is possible in the future, newcomers may not get one for one back again. It’s up to our legislature to mandate it. Which they have so far.

Alex, you made a couple good points, the one that gets missed most often is the roof renewal. But what you completely missed is the concept of net metering. It’s not in all states, but states that have it it’s awesome because the grid is acting like an infinite battery. When I overproduce, I give my utility kilowatt hours, and when I underproduce, I get them back one for one. I don’t need batteries this way. Batteries have only specific applications. They do allow you to produce when the power is out but how often does that happen? Batteries are never going to work to get you from summer overproduction to winter underproduction. That’s why net metering, and the grid as an infinite batteryis such a great concept.

There is definitely a change in the way you think to go this route. Wish more was mentioned how to calculate your energy needs.

I have been off the grid for 7 years now. My $30k system paid it self in 5.5 years. The key of making your system pay off this fast is adding a electric car so you do have to buy gasoline.

I guess I'm lucky because it took me about 14 months to finally get solar going. Completing the solar generation agreement with the utility company took another two months. None of the delay was due to government red tape because I live in California. In fact, the permitting, inspection and solar generation agreement were done in less than a month, if I include the wait time. The delays were caused by the incompetence of the solar contractor who wouldn't keep us informed about where they were in the process and wouldn't work with the roofing contractor that we needed to make sure we had a viable roof for the life of the solar system. The contractor was also lazy about submitting documentation to the utility company until I lit a fire under their asses. I sure don't feel lucky after the shenanigans of the solar contractor.

Saving over time is not a good deal if you're already old. I won't live long enough to break even and that's if NOTHING goes wrong and I'm thinking it will. And if the value of my house goes up so do the taxes. This deal just keeps getting worse. I might use VTG or a powerwall so I can be in a VPP but not solar.

Its a bad time right now with high interest rates and new much better systems finaly in supply.
Integrated solar roofing is the future and already cheaper than a new roof with solar ontop.
they are also much more durable than normal american roofs.

How about Bangkok? You probably wouldn’t install solar panel on it, I guess you live in a condominium. Not suitable to mine as well, but we’re going to install our solar panels on our plant.

How many times do americans have to change their rooves? When I grew up we never need to change the roof in 30 years.

I WANT to get solar/batteries, but it’s still too damn expensive. Even with tax credits, the up front costs are still

I am just going to move within 3 blocks of the sun (that would be Phoenix, AZ) so I won't need solar. Muwahahahahahah!
