What Happened To The MythBusters?

Lock In 5% With Bonds:

10 years ago Mythbusters was one of the most popular science-based shows in the world and the longest-running show on Discovery. Fans loved watching the crews put popular urban legends and myths to the test on a regular basis. Yet, despite the popularity of the show, in 2015, Mythbusters announced that they only had one season left of the show. While this was rather surprising for casual watchers, enthusiasts were already aware of some of the background issues behind the show. Shortly before the show got canceled, Mythbusters got rid of the B crew. Also, the show was starting to focus more on cinematic explosions and theatrics instead of the myths themselves. All of these factors had caused viewership to slowly decline over the years to the point where the crew would have to accept lower compensation. Given that the show had already been running for over a decade at this point, the crew decided to call it a day while things were still good instead of milking the show till the very last second. This video explains what happened to Mythbusters and why Mythbusters got canceled despite its popularity.

Mythbusters was so successful because it was one of those rare shows that managed to 'capture lightning in a bottle' so to speak. It was the right show at the right time with a cast that had fantastic on-screen chemistry. Regardless of their off-screen relationships, they all worked together very well in front of the camera. They all managed to be very entertaining without being fake or stupid, which is something very hard for shows like this to accomplish.

Adam and Jamie are definitely a good example of professionalism and showing that you don't have to work with your friends and you don't have to be friends with your coworkers. You also don't have to trash talk people you don't like. They spent decades working together with a mutual respect for the others work, work ethic, and mental process even though they didn't get along on a personal level and had their own ideas for how things should be built.

14 years is a helluva run for any show. Mythbusters helped influence a younger generation of makers and science geeks to embrace who they are and what they're doing. RIP Grant.

Grant may had leave us, but his legacy will live for a long time. As of right now, since 202, Battlebots, series and competition in which Jamie, Adam and Grant were competing in the past, has named it's award for most impressive and technologicly advanced robot of the season, as Grant Imahara Award, in memory of his.

Honestly having your highest rated episode being the finally is such a rare and impressive feat! Very few shows have pull this off, much less episodic shows without overarching plot lines

It is amazing how two groups of people acted polar opposites of each other!! And this show was evident of that!!

What I really loved about this show as a scientist myself was how it was teaching its viewers the procedure of formulating research questions, doing background research, formulating the hypothesis, testing the hypothesis and discussing the results. This is exactly the essence of how scientists work. Each episode was structured like a science paper in itself, only made fun and entertaining to keep the audience engaged.

At the same time, the show was an excellent example of interdisciplinary attitude to problem-solving, where engineers often asked anthropologists and ethnographers to provide additional context about certain urban legends. Such a collaboration between natural sciences and humanities is very rare and highly appreciated.

"Never had dinner together!" Honestly, being friends with people you work with is way overblown, it's perfectly normal. Maybe because I'm in my 40's and realized nobody at work is ever really your friend or I'm just dead inside.

RIP Grant. I still watch Adam on his channel here on YT. I remember when Mythbusters first aired, I was in middle school. It was so amazing for me growing up with this show.

My choir director told us once, "Always leave the stage with them wanting more."

I think it fits with this, we didn't see it get nickeled and dimed into oblivion, it ended just right.
It's like breaking bad, it ended at a good mark. Unlike many series' *Dexter* cough cough.

I think Adam and Jamie demonstrated that you could have a working relationship with someone without having to necessarily like them. Pretty cool to show that having simple respect could still produce so much greatness

My Lowly Opinion: The biggest problem with being able to see Mythbusters was that it was mired to Discovery Channel, which didn't make the leap to streaming until recently. To make matters worse, Discovery has gone out of their way to distance themselves from actual science in favor of click-baity nonsense like big foot and river monsters and ancient aliens, to name just a few. Sadly, Mythbusters was a casualty of the cable media era dying out as streaming rose in popularity. Those who wanted to watch it couldn't (because the releases on Amazon Instant Video were few and far between), and those remaining on cable didn't care for science as much as theatrics.

You could absolutely see the stark contrast of both Adam and Jamie.

I don't have to tell you who was great working with the camera and who was the analytical skilled one

Adam has stated that he respects Jamie and the differences in the way they tackle myths has actually benefitted the viewers. Adam does have a lot of fun and yes sometimes Jamie is way too serious but I think at the end of every myth we got to see the hard work that both of them put into bringing these myths into our homes.

I tuned out slowly as it became more and more about explosions. I'm sure seeing bigger and bigger explosions in person is pretty cool, but it loses its appeal pretty fast on tv.

My son and I were avid fans of the show. He's 22 now and every once in a while something from the show will pop up in a conversation.
Also, Grant's passing was a huge blow for us, it felt like we lost someone we knew.

Mythbusters is a show that defined a generation. it’s one of the most important shows of our generation. And it’s literally saved lives

There's actually been 2 mythbusters who have passed away. Grant Imahara and Jessi Combs (she featured in mythbusters when Kari was on maternity leave)

Adam and Jamie had one of my favorite television dynamics. It makes sense in retrospect that they respected each other but didn’t view each other as friends because that’s the vibe they gave off.

I think we all have had people we’ve worked with who liked professionally but not personally.
