Learning to fall properly definitely saved my arm from breaking one time. Falls slow down once you've had enough practice lol

To anyone who thinks falls happen too fast to adapt, things feel slower once you learn. I was a figure skater and the first thing we did was learn to fall. I could be speed skating and trip or get shoved, and those lessons still kicked in. Rarely got seriously hurt because I knew exactly how to land each time. You can't get thru every fall unscathed due to gravity and all, but man, it's so important to learn to fall. Genuinely surprised most riding lesson places don't teach something crucial like that when it's ten times more important than the riding.

Luckily every time I’ve fallen off a horse I landed in a good position so that I don’t get hurt or I’ve been on really well trained horses and I remember falling off of one and the leaned down because my foot was stuck in a stirrup. Also this is kinda off topic but my sister was out with my horse and her horse while I was away and she got stuck in mud and my horse put his neck out for her to grab and he lifted her out ❤️ that just shows how smart and caring horses are

Emergency dismounts are a necessity in my opinion and should be taught as soon as possible to every equestrian out there

I used to work with problem horses and got so good at falling that once I fell and ninja rolled off into a ready position. Now I’m pretty sure I would just lay on the ground while contemplating whether or not I really needed my body anymore

I think this is such an important skill for all riders!! Once we learn how to stay on, we should learn how to fall safely. In this sport falls happen, this should be incorporated into pony club everywhere. I hope having these techniques on your tool belt will offer you more confidence in the saddle ❤❤❤❤❤

Was riding a horse who tripped with his left foot, slid on ice with his right- we both fell on our heads. I had 1 split second to put my elbow out to absorb my weight, changing the angle upon which my head and neck hit the hard ground, avoiding very serious injury.

This…would’ve served no purpose.

Lol good luck with that!! When a horse puts their head down and you fall forward that won’t do any good!! But hey always learning something new is never bad!!

literally saved my life! I suffered a fall n my leg was still in the stirrup had I not calmed my horse down long enough I would have probably died as he was dragging me next to him.. alot of riders die this way from being trampled.. granted I did mess up my shoulder during the fall n needed to have hardware put in n same with my ankle that got caught in the stirrup... my horse was so afraid he hurt me but tbh I wasn't trained enough to be doing what I was trying to do solo.. learning to fall the right way is extremely important esp when doing this sport I could have lost my foot or worse my life I thank god for this training

I used to do Aikido as a child and learned to judo roll. Saved me when the pony I rode steped into a hole in the geound and fell so bad it ended up doing a side-roll-thing. My teacher said she expected me to end up underneath the pony and was so confused when I rolled away before I could get crushed. I hardly had a bruse but the pony limped for a few days. She was good afterwards though, today she is an old lady.

So even if you start slow, find a way to do these daily, until you automatically fall safely, it has to become muscle memory, it can save your live.

Fell off in a showjumping comp last week, managed to lose BOTH my stirrups before the second jump in a double, and momentum carried me over, off into my horses neck, instead of risking yanking the bridle off his face and hurting him, I rolled off and fell.
Landed and rolled, curling up on the grass/dirt. I snapped my left forearm, both the ulnar and radius, but other then that I’m perfectly fine, if I hadn’t rolled I’d of probably snapped my neck instead!
Don’t worry, my horse is completely well, not even a scratch on him, biggest sweetie ever❤
The fall wasn’t fast, my horse had slowed to a trot when I fell, and I’m young and healthy.
Sorry for reading this whole thing, have a good day!

I started riding at 3 years old that was 63 years ago.
My grandmother told me when I started riding to pick a side and fall to that side when you have to fall
I always found it was easier just to lean forward put my arms around the horse's neck and swing down in front of the horse rather than falling off.

Okay so the first step to falling is having a matress to catch you. Got it👍
