Aikido Bokken For Beginners

Demonstrated by 6th Dan Misawa Sensei of Musashimurayama Dojo Tokyo, Japan
Please excuse my son in the background saying he has to pee in Japanese. That was his way of saying he was ready to leave. Whenever I would pull out my camera to record he would often do his little Ohshiko Dance.

I'm 61 now. At age 30 I was a beginner in his class in Wash D C.
Akido is smooth.

This is just the right exercise for Beginners in every art where you use a Bokken.
I teach this to my friends/students and the "wheel" which means all stances in a fluent rotation.

If getting used to these 2 exercises - one has the basics to move on...

Great Video, great Art, great People.

I am glad all of you are enjoying or have enjoyed this video. I truly miss training with this man. I learned a lot from his method of teaching. I was blessed and honored to find his dojo in Tokyo. I recommend that if you ever decide to go to Tokyo to train - it would be in your best interest to find one of his 4 dojos. Misawa Aikido Juku (School)

I've practiced aikido 5 years ago and still beginner.
I have to move to another city and no dojo there. I want to practice this exact move and this video helps a lot. Thankyou

LMAO the kid in the beginning crying that he wants to pee, and the parent being just "SHUSH!"

nice demonstration, but wish I could see his foot and legmovements better =)

The wide stance at the beginning really limits mobility. His sword tip bounces a lot.

Thank you for uploading this video. My only question is when you were training, how many swings did he have you do for each stance? And in the beginning did he have you just do one stance? If so how many swing for the one stance until you were allowed to move on? Sorry for all the questions, I have my bokken and have been just doing my own thing, but really want to do it right. Thanx again

What would you recommend after this set of instruction?

It looks like he is trying to flick an apple off the tip of the bokken, is that right technique that he is after?

I noticed he had his sword flipped upside down when he drew out his sword is this normal or just preference?

Hello, Im a beginner at Aikido. I have come to a point to start training with a bokken. Which one should I choose? How long shall it be? Heavy or light? Greetings from Germany

@aikidoexpo  Great video!
I have a question... Is it possible or is it valid to use these exercises but starting with the bokken on the right side of the body? So that after drawing, the bokken is held with left hand on top and right hand below?

I'm right handed, but I've felt much more control with my left hand leading

Hello. Firstly, I apologize for my bad English. I would like to know what this "suburi" is called. It seems that Misawa "Sensei" says so, but I do not understand. Can anyone tell the name of this essential "suburi"? Thank you very much.
