Elon Musk Just Revealed Massive Changes On Next Starship Prototype After Flight 4!
Over one thousand changes!
This is the formula that Elon Musk and SpaceX have applied for over a year since Flight 1. After three flights, Starship is becoming more and more stable, but the SpaceX teams will certainly never be satisfied with that.
Even with the recent Flight 4, we still see many notable problems. That’s when Elon Musk revealed a lot of massive changes in the next prototype.
So, how will Starship change in the upcoming flights? What can we expect from these changes?
Let's dive into these questions in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
Elon Musk Just Revealed Massive Changes On Next Starship Prototype After Flight 4!
Before discussing the problems that need to be solved, we must recognize the achievements that Flight 4 has brought. With the successful landing of both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship, it became the first rocket to land all of its launched hardware.
This achievement is the result of many efforts from this flight. Firstly, the vehicle operated stably and reached important milestones even though one engine failed right after leaving the launch pad. This is a clear instance of demonstrating redundancy; having 33 rockets sure does help! Especially when one goes out!

Secondly, the remaining engines performed extremely reliably during both on and off operations. Thirdly, the hot staging ring continued to be effective in the separation process, smoothly detaching from the booster, despite this being its first time in use. Additionally, the grid-fin and landing engine systems worked well, allowing the booster to land safely in the ocean. In space, the heat shields performed better than before, helping the Starship survive the harsh re-entry process. At the launch pad, after many upgrades, the systems continued to operate stably, with no major problems recorded.

To be resolved, thank you.

Just a FYI, they left some tiles off for testing the what if tiles fell off scenario. Haven’t heard of people picking up tiles that fell off during flight.

The reason the heat shields behaved better is because the craft was not rolling around it was maintaining the appropriate course

Flight 5 booster should be another water landing for a number of reasons. Most importantly to avoid damage to the tower 1 until tower 2 is at least nearer completion. If tower1 is damaged during the next launch (4 to 6 weeks from now). Repairs (or tear down & reconstrution) to tower 1 could take over 9 months as well as construction of tower 2 taking about the same amount of time. Which mean almost a year before the next launch putting Starship way behind schedule

Seeing a wave at landing of the Starship may have been the biggest surprise of my life.

Time to start launching real payloads. I'm surprised there was no mention that they successfully reached orbit. All the major problems were with the reentry and landing. No one else in the world is working on safe reentry of their second stage. The rocket is a success. Time to start selling super heavy launch services.

Omit 75% of your blah blah and bring the important items at a lower speed, giving the audience enough time to understand it. This applies to many YouTube videos. For a lot of trees, people fail to see the wood.

Good Morning, Kev. Starbase is a solid company. They will continue to stay on track. They will fix the problems. We all can see that. The Raptor engine failure just says the need to tweet something a little bit more. It's the nature of the beast. The whole concept of this revolutionary space travel is still relatively new. We must not forget that. They will over come the problems at record speed. We are seeing it. Everyday. Compare that to Starliner. This is wild. Great Update, Kev. Have a Great Day.

We suggest using lattice handlebars at the 2nd stage (block2 Starship), similar to those used at the first stage (block1 Starship), made of a heat-resistant alloy. These stern rudders should fold up when landing.

I wonder about the use of high temperature ceramic coatings instead of, or with the current heat tile system. They have ceramic coatings that can withstand up to 5000 F.

Starship is designed with large subsystem and system margins so that reliability required from individual components (e.g. engines ) is attainable. Necessary for a production system.

WOW! So much negativity. it went up and came back down, only a couple of issue to iron out. I think this was an incredible achievement, 4th launch of this Rocket. it will only get better and better.

I think they should make it more like a traditional rocket with a second stage and a payload. So re-entry capsules can be designed like dragon. A specialized Starship just for mars. But the second stage needs a heat shield too so it can be recovered. That seems like the best way to use this system. Re-use boosters fully. Refurbish second stages and the usual maintenance schedule with dragon style capsules and payload fairings. Just the booster alone is a huge asset. I seems like they will have a lot of the same problems that shuttle had when it comes to thermal protection on Starship.

It's very impressive that Starship made it back as planned and under control even though the heat shield was significantly compromised.

It did not quite land all parts, due to the hot staging ring.

After heat shield is in place, wrap entire thing with a new type of shrink wrap. The shrink wrap will hold tiles in place until entering earth atmosphere.

Number B-4 was more exciting than 1, 2, 3. I cant believe they will accomplish a tower catch with B-5, it's too early in my opinion.

Can you dial down a bit on the hamhanded marketing blurb and focus more on the technical questions?
