END of the design industry?

Yeah, I know, it's clickbaity - but I find it funny how often we jump to quick conclusions that design is over and there's no point learning it just because some AI can do something quick and simple.

In Today's video I'm taking a look at Text to Design figma plugin in which you basically type what you want to design and the plugin creates it. Does it work? Is it any good? Can it replace a UI/UX designer? Let's explore!

There is something interesting to observe about AI, technology and honestly even life in general.
Getting to 90% can be expensive (especially in the case of most types of AI), but it's often exponential (e.g. Moore's Law until a few years ago).
Getting from 90% to 100% or even 99% however sometimes seems almost impossible and costs huge amounts of money. 

What is shown to the public is the fast progress and those (seemingly) huge accomplishments, so there's hype and the money keeps flowing.
There are billions being spent on AI with sometimes little progress and the further you go, the slower and more expensive the progress becomes.

So I don't think all those AI tools are going to replace any good designer, developer, writer, editor, etc. any time soon. 
But I do think they could be great "assistants" within the next couple of years. 

I see at as unlikely that any AI can truly replace a skilled human without any assistance until we reach AGI, if we even ever do, which I'm quite skeptical about.

But I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. AI can do those tedious tasks nobody wants to do anyway and allow us humans for more time and creativity. 

I think the future will be AI working together with humans, not AI replacing humans.

Yeah at first sight it definitely felt scary, but it's right that it can't replace a person doing everything from scratch, hearing feedback and tweaking a design accordingly, not to forget being knowledgeable of the market/segment/user base he/she is targeting as well.

I agree, this can be a useful tool in some conditions, especially as the tech advances. But as it is now, it's just faster to do the design manually.

Generating designs with AI will be useful when we can do voice commands in VR/AR. But then we will likely be in a different world altogether.

The human element will always be needed. Everything can't be automated. We have templates for everything these days. Did it lower the value of the design? Nope. I think it has only worked to increase the value of great design.

Unlike previously with grafic design, I welcome some automation in ui design; I'm definitely Pro Lunacy. Aesthetics is subjective, something only humans understand fully & produce efficiently, so if AI handled the functionality, more designers would be able to focus on how to create the most aesthetic ui & compete at it.

having to work with marketers, and non-designers, I can safely say...no it will not replace designers.

At the end of the day, I feel AI is just a tool, the only people interested in this subject are designers and the same is true for every other field that AI is and will be applied to, so the learning curve is still there, in short ignorance plays a significant part in the economy, sometimes it is what makes service, a service, also if someone wants professional work they will hire someone who can actually explain their design choices and that takes designers to do.

As an illustrator, yes ai is great for one off general images but if you need function, a series and/or some super specific things... nope

I think people need to stop being afraid of AI and embrace it. We as designers can use these tools to our advantage. There might be a day that we can eventually create mock-ups and high-fidelity screens that much faster. At the end of the day a program is only as good as the the user using it. If a person without any design experience is telling a machine to move rectangles ultimately the machine will move it, but it can't tell you if your design sucks that is too subjective for AI.

Look at github copilot. All the youtube evangelists (which I respect highly -> same with you) were all having the same proccess of thinking as you in this video. Year later they all released a "I was wrong about copilot" video where they all addmitied that the tool is an overall gamechanger for the whole industry and everybody will be /already is using it every day

This is cool. Now give me a way to art direct an AI using voice commands to do what I have in my head and I can tweak it to a fine sh product. I can already sort of do it with illustrations, bit with design that will make my life much easier. Lol
