Many web-developers think you should close all tags in HTML5 due to the standard, despite browsers tolerating "incorrect" unclosed tags. But in fact it's quite the opposite: "self-closing" tags like <br/> or <img/> are not the part of HTML5. They came from XHTML and now are supported for the sake of compatibility.
