How to Paint Clean Color Notes (like the Impressionists)

Achieving vibrant colors on your paintings is no accident. Painting clean color notes is the key to strong, powerful color. The Impressionist Masters made the distinct color note a thing of beauty. Intentional brushwork that placed a distinct brush mark of clean color is the hallmark of their paintings. Now when you approach your painting try to make each brush mark of color intentional. You will see the colors and overall impact improve as a result.

What do you struggle with more in your painting - Color mixing or Brushwork?

Thank you! Just subscribed 😁I’m a photographer by trade and have just started learning to paint. I made all the newbie mistakes of trying to blend and making it muddy. So this video is really helpful. I feel like learning to paint in an impressionist style is actually teaching me some life lessons too! Letting go of perfectionism, freeing myself up from constraints etc. I’m loving this new journey! 😊

1:52 exactly how I want to paint. I’m a new artist and love that kind of bold brush stroke like impressionist style but I find it hard to achieve. Can you do more tutorials for this?

Hi there, I’m working my way through all your videos, and your free courses too. Learning so much. Thank you hugely. All the techniques are challenging aren’t they when you first start. But after this length of time with you, I’ve come to realise the importance of applying brushstrokes cleanly, variedly (is that even a word 🤭) so finding this video has been a delight. Tomorrow im going to morston quay, north norfolk, uk, so I hope the weather is kind to me, and I can find a bit of it to simplify, with nice lights, shadows and angles and try to put into practice what you’ve been showing me. Did I say thank you 💐

I love all the musical metaphors, colour note is a new concept to me! 🎶

this was really informative, and yes I have to stop fiddling with the brush stroke after I place them

Question: have you ever used oil pastels, and done a demo with them? That's what I'm using and I would love to see what you do with them.

Hello Malcolm, would you briefly explain or maybe do a demo on using the ‘broken colour technique ‘. I would guess it would be much more difficult keeping the colours clean . Thanks

Thanks for all the instructions you provide us. In which of your courses can we learn to paint like impressionists

Hi Malcolm, would your gouache painting course be suitable for someone with absolutely no painting experience?

I'm enamoured by your videos and love the look of gouache, but I have never painted before, except in elementary school in the 2000s.
