Shelter was the first gay movie I have ever seen. Thank the lord, because it was one of the reasons I decided to come out to my friends and eventually family. When Zach telling his best friend was all the motivation I needed to tell mine and started my whole coming out story.

I was worried that Beautiful Thing wasn't going to be on the list... but my big gay heart melts when i watch it. It's hilarious, and moving, it's over the top but understated and it has a fabulous Mamma Cass soundtrack. I gave a copy to some friends who live in Louisiana and they had to watch it with subtitles because they couldn't understand the accent lol

Big Eden will forever be my favorite Gay film of all time. It is amazing to watch it 24 years later--long since marriage equality, the destruction of the Twin Towers in NYC, and the invasion of smart phones which has all but eliminated the landline. Just like Schitt's Creek, the mythical town of Big Eden harbors no homophobia or malice.

I've seen most of these. Gods Own Country is top 3 for sure. For happy endings I'd suggest Latter Days / All Over the Guy or if you prefer something newer then Unicorns or The Astronaut Lovers. My personal favorite is Undertow (Contra Corriente). The ending isn't "happy" but it'll leave you crying tears of joy. Cheers.

I have seen the whole movie of "God's Own Country" about 11 or 12 times but have seen the last 20 minutes of it about 25 times... I have to rewatch it cause I am crying through my first rewatch and have to watch it again. "Beautiful Thing" always makes me smile when I remember the woods scene... Love

God's Own Country is my favorite on this list, but I love "All Over the Guy, " too. Laughed and cried, watching both!

(Not so) Fun Fact: there actually used to be a criteria that movies/shows had to meet in order to be broadcast.

One of the key elements was no happy ending for the gay character. They usually had to die of disease or a hate crime, but were also expected to be portrayed in the worst light possible.

It was all about sending a false and heavily christianized message that homosexuality was ALWAYS bad!
