I think the blooming issue is caused by setting the brightness to maximum in a pitch dark room.

no blooming in iPad pro M2 12.9inch!! Of course, unfortunately, two types of panels are used in M2 ipad pro 12.9 inch one is a model made in Japan display is unique and wonderful, the other is a model made in Taiwan, which is a little better than the display of the iPad Pro M1 12.9 inch

Thanks for the comparison (since I am interested in preordering one). Unfortunately, once you did the side comparisons the camera always was shown from the side while you said "can't note anything looking at it from the front". We could never see that. Maybe you could consider adding a short comparison snippet (follow up or something).

About the automatic brightness etc on the camera (since I do video myself): Use the camera on spot metering before you start your clip on something next to it (like some grey item, you could then get your colors right as well if you don't shoot raw video but rather in some codec which you most likely do), i.e. when you adjusted your room and lightning conditions (windows open/closed and lights the way you want to test it) but the screen on the ipad still turned off. Then you use that exact metering setting in custom mode for the video and turn the ipad pro display on.

It's really hard to judge anything otherwise and we can only trust on what you have to say about it. What I have gathered from my own experience though owning a 1152 zone (asus pro art pa32ucx) under normal usage it's not an issue and you only can note it in extreme conditions when you look for it. The advantages it brings to the table make up for it. Mathematically speaking you would need to bump up the zones extremely to make it even less of an issue which is not feasible currently, micro led is not here yet any time soon and oled has other issues (e.g. not just life spawn or potential burn in with long static contents but also color shifts over time and the ipad pro will be used for color grading and such with many screen hours as well).

Does blooming affects notetaking on dark background?

It's terrible, used for Tab S7+, this is killing me. Using LG 32EP950, LG CX 48 and Z Fold 3, now I'm on iPad Pro M1 2021 and gosh, it's horrid :(. Mostly HDR content :/

Watch ‘In time’ movie intro even on low brightness is shockingly bad

Has this been fixed with software? Or is this still an issue?

The only issue that should be a deal breaker on the 12.9" is the size and weight of the tablet. Not if there is 'blooming' on the 12.9".
