I was introduced to Hank Jr.'s songs by a young man whom I was very in love with. My dad hired him on a construction job and being in a new town he wasn't familiar with the roads. They were in Rocky Top, North Carolina. One Sunday afternoon not long after they'd been there, he decided to go for a "spin" through the country roads, along with a good friend of his who also worked at the same site. They had been drinking...topped a hill...and ran through a four-way stop, hitting an RV. My BF lived 9 days in ICU after several surgeries...he never regained conscious. Our friend who was with him broke one of his legs really bad, and an arm too. I was reunited with him a few weeks ago on FB, and he is disabled as he'd lost that leg recently and was still receiving physical therapy.

When he says, "Don't play I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "Your Cheating Heart" was his Dad's big hits.

I would recommend, if you can find the time, to watch a documentary on his life. From his country music legend Father's early death, to his upbringing by his mother to imitate and recreate his Father's music, to his finally rebelling and making his own style of music. His fall, literally from a mountain, having his face torn off and his comeback from that, it is a fascinating story and he is a fascinating man who is a legend in his own right, and an everyday guy at the same time.

Wow. Reminds me when I was early twenties. There was a large country bar (that at the time was considered in the country) in the outer St. Louis area. We had a group of friends from work that went to this country bar all the time. So much fun. The bar is gone and has been replaced with housing. It was one of those places that had dirt parking. I wore cowboy (girl) boots, jeans, and tucked in country style blouse.

The song is about living under his father's shadow. At the time there was a lot of, producers mostly, trying to put out a certain kind of sound. So a few outlaw country people came along and said we're not having that. These guys are Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe, Willie Nelson and they changed the old sound. Hank was one of those guys and the fact that the way Hank was living was about to kill him like his father. Of course he fell off that mountain in the 70s which may've encouraged him further to do it his way.

YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE TO KNOW MUSIC AND SOCIETY GO HAND AND HAND. IN 1970 I WENT TO A CONCERT CALLED WINTERS END FESTIVAL WITH A QUARTER MILLION OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE AND SAW A FEW NAMES YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE. JOE COCKER RICHIE HAVENS ALLMAN BROS, B.B.KING GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, LITTLE RICHARD IKE & TINA TURNER, CANNED HEAT, SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE. THE BEST 3 DAYS OF MUSIC IN MY LIFE. JUST THINK OF ALL THAT TALENT IN ONE PLACE. WE WERE BLESSED TO LIVE IN THE 70'S.

I love Junior !!! One of his songs ALWAYS was blasting at parties back in the day. When we'd cook a pig in the ground and have cold beer everywhere any Bocephus fan KNOWS what song is gonna be playing.... All my rowdy friends are coming over tonight !!! 😀

This is classic country. I think I was stationed in Montana the first time I heard this song. I also like Hank's All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down. I also recommend Merle Haggard's The Fightin' Side Of Me. All the references to Bocephus reminds me of a Cedric The Entertainer comedy bit called Bomanishis, you should check that out.

Loved this. Of course growing up in Tennessee its almost mandatory as he was for years the Monday night football theme song singer. Please try T.G. Sheppard TG was often promoted by Elvis. Try, I loved Em Every One, or Only One You. hugs n thanks for doing what you do.

I love the video of All my Rowdy Friends because of all the legends in the video. Thanks Ty. His song Red, White and Pink Slip Blues hits us all in today’s society, but HankJr. Is all about what’s real.
