Canadian government pushed to boost seniors benefit as federal budget looms

Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is into the home stretch of preparing to deliver this year's federal budget.

Freeland is set to table the spending plan in the House of Commons April 16 and she's been getting lots of advice on what should make the cut.

That includes advice from MPs on the House of Commons Finance Committee who, after cross country hearings with Canadians, prepared a pre-budget submission containing more than 300 recommendations.

As our chief political correspondent David Akin reports, some of those recommendations are aimed squarely at making life more affordable for senior citizens.

Telling Seniors to go back to work...even the suggestion is ludicrous, the cost of living in this country is getting out of hand...someone's head should roll for this. I can't believe they had the nerve to suggest this after giving THEMSELVES a raise..with our tax money.

Pensions and benefits should be tax free.

Yet Justin has no issue spending hundreds of millions to put asylum seekers in hotels in Niagara Falls with free meals and healthcare and daily allowance, yet seniors who’ve paid into Canadian society for 50 + years get the shaft. Way to go Justin.

Trudeau govt just gave themselves a nice pay raise.

Just use laundered money, I mean "foreign aid" to help Canadian seniors instead! Taxes paid by Canadians should be
prioritized for use by Canadians.

What the absolute f is this? Let the elderly finish their lives with a livable benefit. They did their labor. Why are we even suggesting they give up their retirement? Ludicrous.

some people are receiving oas and never worked a day in their lives in canada and other benefits. telling seniors to go back to work is an insult. they have worked with low wages. stop messing them around and raise oas and whatever else they are entitled to

Just make RSP withdrawals tax free and most of us won’t need any handouts at all. Charging “income tax” on using your RSP isn’t fair.

a simple solution to me would have seniors not pay tax on necessities!

Trudeau should get minimum wages for entire life. He deserves it.

Are they bloody serious. Seniors worked most of their lives to have the chance to retire and enjoy life for a very small period of time relative to how long they worked, now they are being told too bad, go back to work if you want to eat. What a cold and heartless government!
