The bottom of the ship is painted red, so they know when to stop loading cargo because it could sink if it gets below that line

The main reason is because In most cargo ships the bow haves a line near it's hull, which indicates the distance that is safe for it to be above water.

If a ship is overloaded the line will be below water which would cause the ship to capsize or sink
