Flo this is going to be perfect. I’ve been looking for a good beef and barley soup recipe and I can tell this will be it. Using the instant pot will be a bonus. Nice job!!

Excellent call, Flo.  Being on the cusp of Comfort Food Season, you chose a comfort food that can be enjoyed over and over in the coming months.  it's gratifying to see pearl barley included in this recipe -- it tends to be ignored and unappreciated these days.  In the aftermath of an occasion featuring roast turkey my mother would make turkey/barley soup from the leftovers. It was one of the gustatory highlights of my childhood, and your recipe today stimulated thoughts of it.  Thanks for the memory.

I've been on a beef stew kick. I'm going to try this as well. It's starting to be that time of season for things like this. When I was in high school, I was glad my mom picked me up...those kids were crazy...well maybe not all of them...glad your'e feeling better Flo.

Thanks Flo for another great recipe. Will file this away for when the weather gets a bit colder...I live in Maryland & it's in the low 80's.

FYI - What I do with my tomato paste is freeze it in the can first. Let it defrost for a few minutes, cut both ends with the can opener and push out a perfect tube of frozen paste. Cut off what you need for the recipe, place in a freezer bag and pop it back into the freezer!

Your recipes always live up to the 'Simple, Ordinary and Joyful' motto and this Beef Barley Soup is no exception. I can already 'taste' how delicious the soup will be. Indeed someone mentioned California is still super hot so I will save this recipe till later in the season when hearty soup is called for. Please share a recipe of Clam Chowder - another of my favourite ! Thank you for your hardwork and generosity to share..

This recipe looks still more like Summer than Fall here in Maryland, although it's been beautiful and 80 degrees. That's still a bit too warm for me to be having soup, so I'll save this for maybe a month or two from now....Again, I'm looking forward to the next cookbook...Thanks again for all you and Dude do. Cheers!....P.S. Wow, High School starts with 8th Grade! Back in the Stone Age, when I grew up, Elementary School was K-6. Jr. High (as it was called, which is now Middle School) was 7-9. High School was 10-12....That's how it was for someone born in 1952. LOL

No surprise here - soup looks yummy and right up my alley! I make a "hamburger soup" which is a recipe I got out of an old "Canadian Living" cookbook magazine. It's different than your beef and barley soup in that it has a 28 oz can of tomatoes and I always add corn 'cause my son *loves* corn. The point here is that the recipe does not contain barley, but I always add about 1/3 cup 'cause we love barley in my house. Since there are only 2 of us, the big pot lasts a few days. The first day, it is definitely like a soup. However, on reheating it, the barley causes it to thicken up and it becomes more like a stew. 😊
