Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some very, very useful verbs we use when we talk about university. Okay? So if you're going to university, if you're taking the TOEFL test or the IELTS test, these words are very, very important, because they're very common and we use them all the time.

So, to teach you these verbs, I've decided to tell you a true story about a friend of mine. My friend's name is Paul, and I'm going to tell you all about his university experience. While I tell you this story, it can help you if you imagine it in your head. Whenever you're learning new vocabulary, the more you can visualize or make a mental picture of the words you're learning, the easier it will be to remember them. Okay? And, if my friend, Paul, is watching this, I'm sorry, Paul. I'm telling some stories about you, maybe a little personal, so I apologize in advance.

Okay, so let's get started about Paul's life and problems at university. All right, so the first verb I'm going to teach you is "enroll". "Enroll" or "sign up for". These mean the same thing and it's where... When you decide to go to university, you enroll in a class or you enroll in multiple classes. Paul enrolled in four classes. The class we're going to be focused on, though, is Psychology 100. Paul enrolls in Psychology 100. Okay? I can also say: "Paul signs up for Psychology 100." So this means he's decided to take Psychology 100, and he's told the university, so now he's in the class. He's enrolled.

So, Paul, at first, was a very good student. He studied very hard. Okay? If you study hard, it means you "hit the books". "Hit the books" means "study hard". So, after Paul enrolled in Psych 100, Paul hit the books. Every night he went, he opened his book, and he studied. He hit the books.

Then, the professor, the prof "hands out the assignment". So this means the professor of Psych 100, he gave Paul an assignment. "Here, Paul, I want you to write this essay." Okay? So the prof hands out an assignment. Okay? So the prof gives you work.

So, after the prof hands out the assignment, Paul is very stressed. You know, he can't think about the assignment, he's too stressed out about it, so he ends up partying, he, you know, has fun. And then the assignment comes due, which means he has to give the assignment in, imagine on a Thursday. The night before the assignment is due, Paul decides to "pull an all-nighter". "Pull an all-nighter" means you stay up all night to finish something. So, for Paul, he did not have his assignment ready. It was not completed, so in order to get it finished, Paul stayed up all night working on it. So, at 3am, Paul was working at his... On his assignment. At 6am, Paul was working on his assignment. Well, Paul finished his assignment because he pulled an all-nighter.

So the next day, he goes to class, and guess what he does? He has his assignment, he's very happy he's finished, he "hands in his assignment". So Paul gives his assignment to the professor. Paul hands in his assignment. We can also use the word "paper". "Paper" is another word for "essay". So, in Psych 100, Paul had to write an essay. We can say: "Paul wrote a paper", and he handed it in.

So, if you... If we go back a couple steps, the professor hands out something.

Hey, Emma. Thank you for the lesson! Here is my example:

"Although I was already *enrolled* in a graduate course, I decided to *sign up for* another graduation program, in order to have a more competitive curriculum. As my classes and the assignments to *hand in* were doubled, I had to *hit the books!* For once, I had to *pull an all-nighter* before my final exams week. Even though I was very excited about both programs, I wasn't able to do my best in all the assignments *handed out* to me. Moreover, it was hard to keep up with all the projects without *cutting/skipping* any classes. As a result, I was always *falling behind* the schedule and *getting caught up.* Due to lack of time, I decided to *withdraw* from one of the courses. I figured it was better to *drop out, * than to be *expelled/kicked out* because of *plagiarism.* "

Last year, my best friend and I decided to sign up for an online Math course when we were constantly struggling with this subject. Luckily, both of us managed to power through the course and we did not drop or withdraw from the course. It turns out to be a blessing in disguise. At first, I somewhat fell behind in this class because I had always been hopeless at Math. However, with the support and help from my best friend, I managed to get caught on and be more on the ball in that class. One day, my professor handed out an important assignment and we were supposed to hand our papers in on the next Monday. I was fiercely determined to hit the books and get good marks on this assignment. I was very wary of plagiarism, I did not want to plagiarize anyone's work as it could have been a serious offense. In the end, I got a high score on my work and I was singled out of compliments in my class. I had never been as proud of myself as that ever.

Love your vids!

I enrolled in a law university. To be honest sometimes I skip classes but manage to caught up. Usually I pull an all-nighter because I'm a procrastinator. I never plagiarize because I'm to afraid to be kicked out.

Greetings from France.

I'll tell you my story when I was a first year medical student ; when I enrolled the faculty of medicine I was very glad and happy, but I started my class in the worst way I could I skipped classes, hang out with new friends... .Exams started within few months and professors handed out assignments, I was very distracted because I fell behind and scared of being kicked out so I decided to get caught up so I worked hard, hit the books and pulled all nighter till the day when I handed in my assignments ; luckily I got through but I've learned a hard lesson.

useful and easy learning vid!

I signed up for English literature when I was a freshman. At the beginning of the semester, I hit the books and handed in all of the assignments on time. But since the course got harder, I felt bored and started to cut class. I found myself falling behind, and if I withdraw from the course, I will not be able to graduate. Thus, I pull an all-nighter to hit the books and finally get caught up. The result is that I pass the class without plagiarizing and I was not expelled from the university.

Thanks, Emma. recently I have been learning English with you for while. I love your accent you speak very clearly and understandable. let me say you my plan I watch every day your clip. anyway. I learn from this clip the words related to university and college. if you add some information about the vocabulary used in university regulations would be so useful. however whatever you are teaching is useful. as well as nesseacery. On top of it all, the time that you take for every clip is excellent around 10 minutes. may I know, where does your accent belong to? I love it.

I've been hitting the books for a few months in preparation for a pre-entrance college exam, which's going to be issued in a couple of weeks. So, you know, there's no much time left. Well, I want to enroll in Liberal Arts. I think I'll never fall behind in it neither will I skip class because it's something that I'm very interested in. I'm also ready to pull an all-nighter whenever necessary to hand in my assignments just on time. Should I ever fall behind for any unknown reasons, I'll try to get caught up as fast as I can. And I think plagiarizing is so wrong, especially because you're only supposed to do your best at college if you really want to become a qualified professional in future. You have to prove yourself you're worth getting there. Plagiarizing is lying to others and to your own self. So be true to yourself and do your best. Otherwise, you might fail and be kicked out of the university.

Thank you Emma, Here is my example
i am planning to move to Germany for higher studies i am looking for mechanical or IT related courses like i decided to signup for master's program in order to have more competition in Germany. My classes and my assignments were handed in doubled. i Had to hit the books but i am not able to concentrate more in studies but i decided to pull an all-night work hard then i will finish my assignment on time. I am very excited about the master's program because i am very excited to give my best and also handed out to me the assignment. more over we can't cutting or kick out the classes and due to lack of time i decided to kickoff one subject i figured out by it was not able to complete the course that's why i expelled from the course because of plagiarism.
