I worked at an aquarium for a while. It took four extremely nervous aquarists, people that regularly fed and swam with sharks, just to clean the blue-ring's tank. One person to clean, two to physically hold the container with the octopus closed, and a fourth to supervise everyone. It was literally the single most feared animal in an entire facility containing jellyfish, sharks, stingrays, stonefish, moray eels, as well as the scorpions, spiders and snakes held in the wildlife park next door.

Here’s a good rule to follow when you’re out in nature. If it’s pretty and colorful, don’t touch it. 90% of the time it can kill you

Octopuses have such magnificent skin and camouflage abilities. The different textures it mimics in the blink of an eye is astonishing

Grew up in Sydney. found one in a small rockpool with kids playing all around it. Balmoral beach (Edwards beach) just to the left of the island. I was looking at another normal octopus and when it moved the Blue ring darted out beneath it to the other side of the pool. So camouflaged.

Fun fact: The blue ringed octopuses venom is at least 1200 times more toxic than cyanide.

My friend and I were fishing when he pulled one up, it decided to go for his lure .
At first he thought it was seaweed so tried to yank it off which obviously upset it lol.
He called out to me saying he had a little octopus on, he had no idea how much danger he was in and I screamed to him to drop it.
Poor bugger turned white when he saw the blue flashes lol, anyway I got it back in the water and he was lucky not to get bitten so no harm all round.
Got to be careful the entire coast here.

To think that I unknowingly held one of these when I was young still makes me thank the gods I was calm with animals, if I had agitated it for a single second then I’d probably not be here.

Unlike our various snakes and spiders, there's no anti-venom for the BRO - they just treat the symptoms and you hope you survive. You need to be in emergency care within 15-30 minutes to have a chance, realistically.

These animals are amazing...but also dangerous, but never intentionally: only if it is agitated or in contact with humans. Apparently, some victims of being harmed by these animals had blue rings appear on their skin.
