How to scale logs using the Doyle scale. It can be done from a reference book or the table in the above link, or you can approximate the board foot in a log with the Doyle Equation. The equation is board feet are equal to the diameter inches minus 4, divided by 4, and the quantity squared times the length in feet. After calculating or scaling the log for board feet, I go over how to calculate board feet of milled lumber. How many board feet in a log?

Also on dimensional lumber you can multiply the (height x width x length) and divide by 12 = Board feet, no conversions necessary, works on any size lumber.

Doing what he is doing, would take all day to measure a load of 30 logs. Who handles 21 ft lumber or 15 ft lumber. I used international scale . Much easier.its all on your measuring stick
