Why BURNING is a Native American TRADITION...

I hope you enjoy this throwback clip from our controlled burn back in March of 2020. Indigenous people have been practicing controlled, deliberate burns in North America and around the world for millennia. Human-managed fires across their traditional lands are vital as they promote the growth of traditional food sources, like acorns, and basket-weaving materials, like hazel. Between lightning strikes and Indigenous burns, most landscapes in North America were shaped by fire, and many landscapes need it. But for most of the 20th century, U.S. federal fire policy was guided by a strategy of fire suppression, designed to protect watersheds, communities and commercial timber supplies. Without moderate or low-intensity burns to clear fuel, landscapes became primed for more destructive wildfires. TIME TO BURN! Now I get to do something I love to do and help the environment at the same time. Burning is essential to the environment and the ecosystem we are located in. What was fun while doing this prescribe burn was watching how the bison reacted. They didn't flinch. This was a fun project!

The smoke helps keep away flies on the Bison. So less annoying critters.

Dusty, so glad you said Native Americans and not Indians. Christopher Columbus thought that he was in the county of India when he landed here in 1492. He referred to the indigenousness people as Indians!!!

In Gt. Britain years ago, they banned 'Stubble Burning', because of the pollution. The smoke choked entire towns, plus numerous fires, and folk taking advantage of the chance to burn their own household rubbish... the stench was unbelievable...!!!

I have heard that this practice was to prevent forest fires. Of course, they don’t do that when it’s already too warm.

Love watching the cockle burrs burn! Does this kill the roots also or are they just an invasive annual?

My grandfather would burn every couple of years, the carbon is very helpful to the soil. He also let the land rest every 7 years according to scripture.

We call the plant Burdock here and it lives for two years but seeds can survive 10 to 12 years in ground. Roots go deep and spraying must be done early in life cycle. Burning gets the plant and seeds but not sure if root is damaged and may sprout again in spring. Digging gets the root but would take a long time to do a field. Vinegar and other chemicals can kill root if applied and allowed to reach the roots. Cattle can have issues with eyes if they get near the eye lids. Lots of luck in your battle.

In west Texas, some people have said they need to burn their yards, idk what it means or comes from! We are all a part of our heritage!
