155,000 Canadians have been forced from their homes due to wildfires — the most in almost half a century.

With evacuations this year being ordered as a result of Canada’s historic wildfire fight, our country has needed international help, while the federal government is being urged to remove obstacles so Indigenous communities can assist.

Heather Yourex-West explains how cultural burning practices could help mitigate future fire risk in Canada.

Years ago, prescribed burns were a part of the Forest Management plans. That should be restored by the forestry services. Too much fuel on the ground is what makes these fires worse.

How do we know traditional indigenous burning practices aren't responsible for the record fires. Historically indigenous kids and unemployed fire fighters have started most fires in the past.

We should all be doing it. Carbon is a vital ingredient of healthy soil. Look at your lawn. Every year the grass grows with its main ingredient being carbon. Some from the air and some from the soil. We don’t replace that carbon because we are not allow to burn the grass in the Spring.
When the Great One said “Give back to the Land.” This is what he meant.
We will turn our land to deserts if we don’t, just like the once lush land of Egypt were turned to desert by 1000’s of years of over farming, with no or minimal amounts of carbon being replaced.
It’s not an Native thing, it’s a Human thing to do.
