The Gulf of Tonkin Lies

The 1964 Gulf of Tonkin congressional resolution authorized President Lyndon Johnson to conduct military attacks in Vietnam. This was considered a blank check for American military intervention that was based on lies. The American destroyers USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy were not attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats on August 4th 1964, which was used to justify this resolution. This is now widely known, but since the Maddox had been fired upon two days earlier, some feel it was justified. However, few know that the US Navy had been supporting armed attacks along the coast and the Vietnamese were defending themselves.

I, a Vietnam vet who while working in the USPS would often find myself working between two other particular Vietnam veterans.

The older one had served in the Navy and was a petty officer on board the USS Maddox during the 'second attack', "Never happened. I was there top side, there was no attack."

The younger one had been in the Marine Force deployed to "the embassy" during the Fall of Saigon.

"All of a sudden an officer I had never seen before grabs us and orders us to set up and man a burn barrel and burn the documents because only humans were being carried out on the choppers.Then this dweeb comes out heading a line of guys with cardboard boxes. Those boxes are holding bundles of brand new hundred dollar bills, Do You KNOW How Hard it is to burn a brick of paper?"

I have relatives that fought, died, and escaped this war. And to find out it was based on lie is unbelievable. All the trauma they experienced, the people they lost truly upsets me because they had to suffer the pain after the war. Ive heard stories of people trying to escape, a mother had to leave her baby behind because it would cause them to be discovered and just sad things they went thru.
