I have spent 2 days on a Kiam Sherwood H60 hedge trimmer that wouldn't start. Drained some very old fuel (I thought this was the problem); checked filters - clean; checked for a spark - good; took the plug out, cleaned it and it looked fine; stripped the carb. and couldn't find anything wrong/blocked. Running short of ideas, I dropped some fuel into the carb directly, and it fired up. Tried again and it fired up and kept running. Once warm it restarts fine. Searching Youtube for any ideas, I found this and what appears to be the solution. The choke plate in the closed position has a small gap (0.5mm) on the far side from the pivot - as you showed, you can press it down a little to close it fully. I managed to get it to fire from cold (briefly) by holding the choke plate down - the problem being you need 3 or 4 hands to do this.
Along with your video on starting one of these engines using full / part throttle, I think I have a solution - so thank you very much.
I haven't been able to find a replacement choke plate (in the UK) for the Kiam yet, so might have to have a go softening and resetting the the existing one.
Starting the Kiam whilst holding the throttle open could also be a challenge - maybe a clip or a helper!

I had that problem on a redmax blower one after some investigation I found the choke lever wasn't sealing like that one you had. I put a new air cleaner box on and problem solved. You are the man!!!

I heat them up with a heat gun and rebend the choke plate in less than 5 minutes and they work fine. Don't even have to order parts.

Great. Have to check my Poulan leaf blower. Maybe a good place for a flashlight check. Thanks you.

Agree with Jason Busch...heat it up works every time. Should I start making these type of videos I have all kinds of easy fixes... I flip mowers and the less money in it the better. If it's a repair I'll ask the customer if they want to buy a new one. Good Find.

I would have the worst headache if I did a test like that. Also, the only air that is supposed to get through when the choke is engaged, is through that tiny hole in the flapper.

What if you try to use a heat gun to shape it back to place. 🤔 and of course not while it's installed 😅
