A BSD Ignoramus Blindly Looks at GhostBSD

Today we have a look at Ghost BSD and I get stuck on updating issues. Overall it is a great OS, but it is one that takes a lot of research. I hope to have the time to research the BSD family, because I really want to see the full potential. That being said, have a look for yourself.

Just a small correction: BSD stands for „Berkeley Software Distribution“.

I discovered FreeBSD about a year ago.
I'm a simple Linux desktop user, not a power user.
I installed FreeBSD on a VM two months ago and haven't been able to make a lot of things work.
So I installed Ghost BSD two weeks ago and so far EVERYTHING works! I'm in love!
I'm about to make it a hardware install. After 20+ years, I want to replace Debian as my daily user.
Good luck with your install.

i remember pcBSD, it showed some promise, installed right away on a laptop of the day. its discontinued now, i have installed ghost bsd as well, but the linux community is MUCH bigger and is just so much fun, especially arch and the AUR. the linux community is just too awesome! I love each and every one of you, thanks so much for being a part of this! yet more proof that freedom always produces better results in every way!

If Linux ever offended my sensibilities, I would jump to FreeBSD in a heartbeat.

If it's alt-tech, then I will install Ghost BSD on my PC.

I have used Ghost BSD and tried it as a daily driver for a while. I am not a content creator like yourself, however even for a general use case there are three main problems. DRM enabling is missing from Firefox, Wi-Fi hardware database, and printer hardware database. DRM is important if you watch online streaming services, even free ones. The other problems with Wi-Fi and printers is that the driver databases are very limited. As for general usage case scenario, it is somewhat different than the Linux distros I've used and can take some getting use to. Overall though, notwithstanding these problems I think that Ghost BSD is a good BSD Distro for beginners starting in BSD.

I would not state that Linux is based on UNIX, it is modeled after UNIX. The relevant difference is that Linux did not use any of the UNIX-code, so not based on it. But they used similar concepts and syntax while creating Linux and the GNU-utilities.

Just installed it on my Thinkpad T450 and its running like a panther. I've played rudimentarily with FreeBSD for many years on and off... and love it. This is my favorite so far this time. Its fast, and its NOT Linux which makes me very happy. Its Unix-like, but more Unix than Linux. ANd all those distros with Linux have just irritated me... plus, there's nothing like ports. CD to the dir of the program you want to install, in the terminal, and type.. 'make install clean' ... and it does it all. Beats Linux by miles.

I hope you enjoy switching to Unix~

Enjoyed that. I've actually never been successful installing any BSD. Always get stuck somewhere. Might have to try this one again.

Fun look at GhostBSD Tom👍🏻, I'm thinking of trying FreeBSD on a 2nd SSD inside my Debian 13 Workstation. Do I need to...no...why...because why not I'm a geek. It would be nice to be proficient in BSD also for reasons.

Sorry to mention this but Linux is NOT based on anything, it's one guy's hobby project to make something more or less UNIX-like kernel at his home, for his own computer. After he published the kernel, the GNU people started fairly soon to use it with their part of an UNIX-like OS.

If it is to show bsd you could show nomad bsd too which might be handfull for a bunch of users and feels more complete imho

With the large numbers of Linux distros competing for attention, I wonder if some of this coding talent would make the move to developing FreeBSD distros. I'd love to see stable BSD distros that would compete with Linux just for fun. In the meantime, Linux does the job surpassing all expectations. Debian 12 KDE is awesome.

The BSD court case didn't birth Linux. It just allowed it to take lead, and develop in the absence of BSD development.

I just install this ghostbsd and goes smoothly with update and install libreoffice, ncmpcpp, and cantata. I even rearrange the desktop to look like windows 7. It's a great os

I had upgrade issues in the past and the maintainers mentioned that they intended for you to do full package updates instead of partial (like your command) the partial is from the core FreeBSD os.

So you should be doing: sudo pkg upgrade -f

That will handle upgrades like the GUI does.

I like the idea of BSD, but as a gamer that runs STEAM, I don't think I'll be switching from Manjaro, and Solus anytime soon if it can't even update correctly.
