Mining giant BHP has reported record iron ore production and sales during the past financial year thanks to improvements at Port Hedland and record production from the South Flank mine.

BHP produced about 260 million tonnes of iron ore during the year, which it sold for an average price of $US101 per tonne.

It only cost the company about $US18 per tonne to produce the ore.
