The X-Men are a superhero team appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Jack Kirby, the team first appeared in The X-Men #1 (September 1963). Although initially canceled in 1970 due to low sales, following its 1975 revival and subsequent direction under writer Chris Claremont, it became one of Marvel's most recognizable and successful franchises. They have appeared in numerous books, television shows, 20th Century Fox's X-Men films, and video games. The X-Men title may refer to the superhero team itself, the eponymous comic series, or the broader franchise including various solo titles and team books such as the New Mutants, Excalibur, and X-Force.

In the Marvel Universe, mutants are humans who are born with a genetic trait called the X-gene which grants them natural superhuman abilities, generally manifesting during puberty. Due to their differences from the majority of humanity, mutants are subject to prejudice and discrimination; many X-Men stories feature social commentary on bigotry, justice, and other political themes. The X-Men have fought against a variety of enemies, including villainous mutants, human bigots, supervillains, mystical threats, extraterrestrials, and malevolent artificial intelligence. In most iterations of the team, they are led by their founder Charles "Professor X" Xavier, a powerful telepath who runs a school for mutant children out of his mansion in Westchester, New York, which secretly is also the headquarters of the X-Men. Their stories have frequently involved Magneto, a powerful mutant with control over magnetic fields, who is depicted as an old friend of and foil to Xavier, variously acting as an adversary or as an ally.

Early X-Men issues introduced the original team composed of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, and Iceman, along with their archenemy Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants featuring Mastermind, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Toad. The comic focused on a common human theme of good versus evil and later included storylines and themes about prejudice and racism, all of which have persisted throughout the series in one form or another. The evil side in the fight was shown in human form and under some sympathetic beginnings via Magneto, a character who was later revealed to have survived Nazi concentration camps only to pursue a hatred for normal humanity. His key followers, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, were Romani. Only one new member of the X-Men was added, Mimic/Calvin Rankin, but soon left due to his temporary loss of power.

The title lagged in sales behind Marvel's other comic franchises. In 1969, writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Neal Adams rejuvenated the comic book and gave regular roles to two recently introduced characters: Alex "Havok" Summers (Cyclops' brother, who had been introduced by Roy Thomas before Adams began work on the comic) and Lorna Dane, later called Polaris (created by Arnold Drake and Jim Steranko). However, these later X-Men issues failed to attract sales and Marvel stopped producing new stories with issue #66 (March 1970), later reprinting a number of the older comics as issues #67–93.

Henry Cavill and Channing Tatum are EXACTLY what we need in comic movies. People who are obsessed with comics/games.

I remember back in like 2006 hearing about Channing Tatum as Gambit, it’s pretty surreal having him in Deadpool, but he legit has been wanting this for most of MY life so it’s pretty cool he finally got it

It makes me really happy to see people like Channing Tatum, Henry Cavill, and Ryan Reynolds actually respect the stories they portray. It really is something else to see the character brought to life, instead of just an interpretation of the character on screen.

it was a genuine highlight of my year being happy for people on both sides of the screen. It felt like a win for everyone involved. Leaving the theater feeling good is a rare experience nowadays

I really hope that they give him a movie because his performance in "Deadpool and Wolverine" was absolutely marvelous, and the only condition I have other than the Writers, directors and actors having more creative liberty, is that Gambit's eyes look like they do in the comics, because that is one of the main parts of his Origin story.

I knew that he’d been trying to play Gambit in a movie for years, but the fact that he’s been acting as Gambit since childhood really makes it incredible to finally see him in the role

He's coming back! He was literally born for the role. Crazy to think Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Channing Tatum, & Wesley Snipes brough Marvel back to Relevance. Thank you Ryan for making this all possible. MARVEL & FANS OWE

One has to wonder how close channing was to just losing it. Between him being gambit, wearing the iconic suit, and being surrounded by four marvel legends. It mustve been a full blown meltdown for him.

Btw this is channings debut as a marvel character. I just cant imagine the sheer level of happiness he mustve had during this whole thing.

And to think. Him, wesley, Ryan, and Garner were the first people to see Hugh in his suit before anybody else did. Aside from the staff of course.

I remember for the longest time Channing Tatum being fancasted as Gambit and just how much we all wanted it!

Well, that's gratifying that he actually wanted to play Gambit all this time because we wanted this over 20 years ago back when he was a little more than a newby, career bussing, but still little more than a newby. Very cool. He knocked it out the box, too.

This is simply meant to be. The Gambit solo film has to happen and with the MCU integration of the former marvel catalog of films characters. It will be epic.
