How To Enable Disable Compatibility Mode For Apps In Windows 10. When Windows 10 first came out, it was a hive of bugs. The OS was better than Windows 8 / 8.1 (which wasn't an achievement), but calling it stable would have been a bit of a stretch.

Desktop apps that worked great on Windows 7 and even Windows 8 / 8.1 often struggled to work on a Windows 10 system.

Since then the situation has greatly improved, but some older applications still do not work with Windows 10. By launching them in a mode called compatibility mode, it is however possible to use them normally.

To make older apps run more smoothly, Windows 10 has a compatibility mode where apps consider the operating system to be an older version of Windows. Today, many more apps are compatible with Windows 10 than five years ago. This option is therefore not widely used, but it still exists and is useful for continuing to run recalcitrant programs.

Compatibility mode can be enabled for desktop applications. It doesn't work for UWP apps. Also, not all desktop apps support compatibility mode.

Stuff happened with my monitor on Win7, and now it seems like the core system itself is in compatibility mode for no reason. Any clue what to do about that?

2/2023: I seem to have a serious problem. I have a friend with back up drive information from her Windows 98 computer. Win 98 (or Win 95) does not have the option to select. Is there any way to read/write files from long ago extensions no longer supported?

I have a question so if I enable the Compatibility Mode on a app does it only affects that app only or does it just literally change from windows 10 to windows 8? I'm not great with computers so I don't really get it...
