The Deer of Nara are beloved National Treasures. But what is the history behind them?

According to legend, a deity by the name of Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto, a god of thunder and swords, came to Nara from Ibaraki at the invitation of priests associated with the Fujiwara Clan. Takemikazuchi is said to traveled to Nara on the back of a large white deer. Which is why the deer are considered to be messengers of the gods. Some even say that all of the deer in the park are descended from this one deer.
