Mr. Jens Stoltenberg took up his post as NATO Secretary General on Wednesday 1 October 2014.

The Secretary General was welcomed to the headquarters by Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, German Ambassador Martin Erdmann, the Dean of the Council, and the Deputy Chairman of the Military Committee, Lt. Gen. Mark Schissler. Mr. Stoltenberg and Ambassador Vershbow paid their respects at the NATO Memorial to the Fallen before entering the headquarters.

He chaired his first meeting of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) that day.

The former Norwegian Prime Minister was appointed by the 28 Allies in March to succeed Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen as Secretary General. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen’s term expired on Tuesday after 5 years and 2 months at the helm of the Alliance.

Mr. Stoltenberg was previously Prime Minister of Norway from 2000-2001 and from 2005-2013.

In a press conference on the day, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, expressed his commitment to implementing the Wales Summit decisions to reinforce collective defence, to expand NATO’s network of partnerships and preserve a strong transatlantic bond.

“The Summit set a clear course. The decisions taken at Wales will ensure that NATO stands ready to face the future”, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg said. “So as I take office, these are my three priorities: keep NATO strong; help keep our neighbourhood stable by working with partners; and keep the bond between Europe and North America rock solid”.

The poor man has aged quite rapidly over the last 8 years. He's done a terrific job though.

They knew then 2014, Jens Stoltenberg would be a success.
He then proved to be the right man in this very, very complicated and important job . Top diplomatic and negotiation skills - and a very good peaceloving leader. No wonder they all want him to stay longer.
