It would be awesome to timestamp the timeline with each answer?

Q : When you're recording a song to a clic, do you record one instrument at a time ? And how do you edit things (do you edit each instruments so that it's perfectly with the clic, or do you edit the bass+guitar+voice etc so that they align to the drums) ?
Thanks for all this, I've been learning from you since the beginning and it made a huge difference in my career as a session drummer !

If you got Josh Freese on here and you guys just chatted about making records and drums I think it would make for a really great episode. Love the channel!

37:01 thank you for answering my question, Eric! Very cool drums and I love the Fairlight sample loop throughout. Rhythm of the Heat is one of my favorite PG tracks. Glad to hear you’re a fan an admirer too. The drums at the end of Rhythm of the Heat are one of those things that seem like absolute magic. I have no idea how it was recorded and compiled with such energy and intensity.

Tape Flanging episode 👍👍 I discovered this sound by totally mistake when, back in the day, I was playing back 2 cassettes with the same track. Such a magic sound. uh-e Satin tape plugin does this very well.

On the topic of digital recording and not limiting your options in tracking for mixing later, do you feel that with the improvements in plugin EQs is it ideal to track without any hardware preamp EQ on drums for instance? Also what are your thoughts on plug in emulations of Neve pres? Debating on whether to upgrade from inexpensive pres to neve clone hardware pres on my drum inputs. Great content by the way! Your channel is amazing!

Hey Eric thanks for giving me credit on the Tape slowed Harmonica overdubbed thing! I am also very convinced that it was a semitone and was all very intentional, if you think about what the song is about and the sound, it makes sense they would have the idea to slow the tape ahead of time to make it more Swampy/muddy, to get a southern feel to it, and water flooding everywhere. They also were most likely aware that The Beatles did this a lot as well, like on their song "Rain" they recorded it much faster for the backing track, then slower for the vocals. Really looking forward to the Tape Azmiuth and the Tape Phase episodes! Also my name is pronounced like Ferris Bulers Day off, "Anyone Buhlir, Anyone?" ha its my first name Brandon and last name Uhlir haha!

The best drum sound is at 6:00 in the song. It must be right when they cut the flanger in. Something happens with the phase and the drums get MASSIVE (especially those couple of seconds before the swirl).

Thank you for answering my question! I learned a lot. One quick thing I noticed on the original release version is around 1:34-1:35 right after he says “break” you can hear one hi hat hit get a lot louder and pan to the right. Is this some sort of compression wonky thing that happened by accident? I doubt it was intentional

Hi Eric! Suggestion: Wound´t it make sense to use the Kevlar Gaffel plugin with snare, in a similar way as you use it with kicks? You usually divide snares into lows and mid/highs... And with that phase thing that makes every thing sound better could lead to a great result! Thank you!

To the person who said that a click allows him to collaborate with his friend thousands of miles away, I'd like to point out that you can do that even if you don't play to a click. Just send each other files and drag them into your DAW with the grid off. Then play in time to what the other person played.

If you find that challenging, you can always have your DAW analyze the tempo of the performance and create a grid to that. Logic does this extremely well and I'm sure other DAWs can do it as well.

Hi,

I am pretty sure that Jimmy Page's echorec was recorded at Headley Grange, because if it was at Sunset it would have played 20% faster (60Hz vs 50Hz). There is a great article on Soundgas about the Echorec where they talk about Pink Floyd having that big problem for their first US tour of Dark Side Of The Moon!

While mixing for the contest I also came to the conclusion that this echorec was sent from the left channel of the drums before they were compressed and recorded to tape. (And I think a second stage of compression was applied while mixing to the drums and the echo).

It's so fun to try to investigate on this song!

The new pulsar modular p821 tape plugin looks interesting, haven't tried it myself though, also curious if you've tried miking the ceiling to capture some room sound from the drums (in the topanga studio)

I would be curious to hear your thoughts on the new P821 tape plugin from Pulsar Modular. It's modeled on Marc Daniel Nelson's tape machine. They spent a long time (over a year) getting it as close as possible. The plugin has gotten a lot of buzz on YouTube and from various industry people. Would be curious to hear if you end up feeling the hype is warranted. Pulsar's plugins are not cheap.

Hey Eric, I was wondering if you could elaborate on how you approach transitions between parts in a song.
I find very meticulously chosen
in many productions of yours, especially “pop oriented” rock songs.
For instance, Grace’s Midnight record its full of cool transitions and ear candys that helps to give a forward motion to them and introduce new elements to the arrangement too.
“Look what we’ve become” has a mysterious swell combined with Grace’s screaming fading out going from verse to chorus that just create this amazing expectation for its rising.
Slash song with Fergie also has this cool guitar swell (I guess its what it is) before it goes to tremolo guitar intro.

Hope you find that an insteresing topic to share at some point.
Cheers

If the binson is its own channel on the tracking sheet, is there a reason why it wouldn't be a "close" snare mic feeding it?

Hey eric, i had the limited budget challenge question! Thanks for replying. I meant it would be awesome to see that challenge on the mr w ev channel, people do it online a lot but would be fascinating to see what you could produce!!
