In science, if you say you don’t know, then you don’t know. In religion, if you say you don’t know, you get ridiculed. Don’t criticise the guy for not assuming an answer.

Step one when conversing with a other human being and having a disagreement right off the bat is to check definitions. If one person says, "I'm an atheist" and another replies, "that's impossible, there is no such thing as an atheist." Then either one of them is lying, mistaken, or most likely, the two parties are using different definitions. At that point the conversation should become about the definitions so that both parties can engage in an honest debate.
