How to extract Strawberry DNA🧬
Hey everyone! Plants are complex, yet fascinating and I’m really excited to share this experiment with you! For gardening content, follow us on @LearnToGrow1 Thank you!❤️

When I homeschooled our older kids, this was one of the science projects we did together 10 years ago, and I still have the original 🍓🧬 we extracted! DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is the building block of all living things. It is located in the nucleus of cells and it is microscopic. The cells of the common garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) contain 8 sets of chromosomes (octoploid), unlike human cells containing 2 sets (diploid). The reason why we can see 🍓🧬 with the naked eye is that it contains more 🧬.

1 strawberry 🍓
1 sandwich bag

🧪Extraction Solution:
1 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. Dish soap
1/2 cup warm water💦
Coffee filter
Rubbing Alcohol (isopropyl)

Squish the 🍓 inside a plastic bag.
Add 1 T. of extraction solution to the squished strawberry and combine. The solution will break down the cell walls and precipitate strands 🧬 releasing them.

Attach the coffee filter to a cup and pour the liquid to strain. Pour about an equal amount of rubbing alcohol into the 🍓 liquid. Let it sit for about five minutes. DNA is insoluble in alcohol and will clump together near the surface.
Use a toothpick or popsicle stick to scoop it out.

You can preserve the 🧬 in a glass of isopropyl alcohol or place a small amount on a slide to view under a 🔬.

Have fun and let me know if you decide to do this and what you think! Have fun!☺️

✳️ Parent supervision is advised for kids conducting this experiment.
