Growing up my parents always told me I could not get a tattoo while living in their house. My mom is Japanese, so to her tattoos meant Yakuza. For my Dad, the only ones who have tattoos are either in a biker gang or military. I got my first tattoo when I was 28. I had my own place, and had moved out years ago, but I did not tell my parents regardless. Every once in a while, they would ask if I had one, and I would change the subject. 10 years later I went on a day trip with my parents, and my mom accidentally saw one of the tattoos. She asked about it, then said nothing. My Dad was parking the car and then joined us. For 2 hours we went shopping, and my mom said nothing. I stupidly thought she maybe wouldn't say anything to my Dad ... I was an idiot. As soon as we got on the highway for the 1-1/2 hour drive home, "Do you know your daughter has a tattoo?!" "What?! How could you get a tattoo!!!" "I can't believe you did this! What were you thinking?!" "Is it just the one tattoo?" No, I have 6 with 5 more planned. "Oh my God!!!"

In most of East Asia, getting a tattoo means you are part of some gang, the Philippines is probably the exception cuase many people walk with tattoos and are chill and some are even part of some indigenous cultures.

I'm asian and I got a tattoo on my shoulder. I hid it as long as I could, but singapore is so hot, so one day my loose shirt slipped and my mother saw it... and it's been a decade, I still haven't heard the end of it 😂 Also her first sentence was "Did you join a gang?!"
