China's new homemade aircraft carrier in operation this year

Brand new and proudly made in China – Type 001A, a homegrown second aircraft carrier, will be unveiled this year. The new carrier would be a base for PLA fighter jets and helicopters. It is broadly similar to the Liaoning and retains the ski jump for launching aircraft, but contains a revised flight deck arrangement among other differences. Military experts say the new naval vessel will be China's first combat-ready carrier, and is likely to be based somewhere near the South China Sea to handle “complicated situations” with the United States. What does this mean for China's blue-water naval capability? Senior Captain Zhang Junshe, Ye Hailin from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Victoria Panova from the Far Eastern Federal University of Moscow discuss the issue.

The CV 16/17 are Type 001/001A and the CV 18/19 are Type 002. The CV 16 is Liaoning and CV 17 is the Shandong. It's not meant to take on the US, it's to be able to defend themselves and their own interests defensively, not offensively.

These Chinese commentators seem to totally overlook the fact that it's not just the USN they need
to factor in when they declare an expanded Chinese Navy will cause no regional arms race.

They are overlooking the Japanese and Australian Navies who are also becoming more and
