First made-in-China aircraft carrier, the Shandong, enters service

China’s first home-built aircraft carrier called the Shandong formally entered service on December 17, 2019. Commissioned by President Xi Jinping, the new warship represents a major milestone in the country’s efforts to build up its naval power. It is China’s second aircraft carrier after the Liaoning, which is a refitted vessel purchased from Ukraine.

Most of people don’t really understand what this means. It means China can build 10 of the same within a couple of years if they want. Look at the highways and high speed train network. China manufacturing is not at the “normal” speed you can imagine. Congratulations to China.

Shandong still needs training time. Compared to the US Navy, the pool of personnel that already has prior experience is tiny.
Even with two aircraft carriers, they would be outnumbered in battle by the Nimitz and Gerald.R Ford classes, not to mention that a PLAN carrier strike group of the same size consumes more oil as Shandong is still oil powered, reducing effective range unless a second supply ship can be arranged.
Even then, the restriction of resupply points to PRC ports means that eventually, they would have to make a long journey back when a US one could sail to any allied naval port to take on supplies.
