Knowing whether or not the mirror in your bathroom, dressing room, or hotel room, is a two way mirror is extremely important for your safety and privacy 🥴. How can you tell if it is a two way mirror or not? The fingernail test! Hold your finger up to the glass, and if there IS a gap between your finger and it's reflection, then it is a standard mirror. If there is NO GAP between your finger and it's reflection then BE CAREFUL, it is a two way mirror!

I tried the fingernail test at a local bar I've gone to many times where they posted like Halloween events and costume contest I've gotten changed in that bar multiple times and I didn't test out the mirror until last week I found out it was a two-way mirror and I'm pretty skeeved out.

So my husband and I stayed at a cheap motel last night while we were road tripping to go on our honeymoon. It was literally like a $50 stay just to take a break from driving. There's 3 big empty walls where a mirror could have been placed but instead the only mirror besides the bathroom is directly in front of the bed which was sketchy. Then directly next to that mirror was a door that had locks on our side, I thought it may have been a closet so I unlocked it to try to see what was behind the door but it wouldn't open, like it was also locked from the other side so I just locked it back up but was creeped out. I did the finger test on the mirror in front of the bed and there was no gap so I tried to check the back of the mirror but it wouldn't come off the wall and we couldn't see behind the mirror. Bathroom mirror was the same way. Also the lighting in the bathroom and near the bed and that mirror was SUPER bright. We were so tired we couldn't drive anywhere else so we stayed but I covered the mirror the best I could with towels. Still can't shake the feeling we were being watched. Also when we checked in, the manager took a cleaning cart in front of the room next door to us and was going in when we were going to our room. When we woke up hours later, the cleaning cart was still in front of the room next door and the manager wasn't at the desk to check us out. I am almost certain we were being spied on. Wish I had thought to try the flashlight test at least. 😳

I used to own a chain of video stores, back when those were a thing; and we always installed a two-way mirror on the wall dividing the office from the store. I usually kept my office dark and used task lighting and I could see everything going on in the store. On the office side, it looked like a window, with a ledge, curtains and all the normal window accoutrements. On the store side, it looked like a large (about 4' high by 5' wide), framed mirror with slatwall and merchandise all around it. There was a lot of mirror and neon and chrome in the store, so it fit right in.

The worst part was when people would come up to it and pop their zits. Happened all the time. I MEAN ALL THE TIME! Two or three times a week. Hey people! Just because you see a mirror, that doesn't make it a good time to expunge your pus-filled pores!!!

Sometimes I'd open the door, which was a few feet down the wall from the mirror and say, "That's a window in the office. please stop. It's gross." They'd always flush red with embarrassment and quickly leave.

The construction of a two way mirror is based on "partial reflectance" in the range of 30 to 70% making the mirror dimmer than a fully "silvered" one, normally on the back layer. This would put the layer of glass between your finger and the reflective layer.
When a two way mirror is installed, both sides look similar and somtimes is installed with "silvered" side forward, hence no gap of glass, and 50/50 chance of detection.

I have a Mirror with no gap between my finger nails, HOWEVER, it’s a closet mirror, so when you slide it it leads into my closet with clothing, and I think it might be too think for someone to squeeze into. So to be sure. Am I Safe?
