A friend who works for the AI department of a major university told me they're only allowed to do so much, then they turn it over to DARPA. But the stuff DARPA has is much scarier than we'd ever want to know about. That's all he could say on the issue.

Small correction on 1:50 : In that particular experiment, they connected the synapses between the neurons randomly. This means that even if they had simulated as many neurons as the human brain contains (that is 100x as many as they did), it would still just have produced random noise and not intelligence. I believe that the purpose of the experiment was primarily to test their models of neurons and the power of the computer itself, not to make progress on AI.There are, however, other projects underway with the goal of actually simulating the entire human brain (including the correct synaptic connections), such as the Blue Brain Project. They hope to accomplish this at some point in the 2020s.

Wait up a second. A few years ago I was reading that we all ready have this. We use AI in digital art studios to learn from the artists that work there, help with the creative pipline, and help the artist do better. I wish I could site the article I read.
