Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you not getting the full benefit of the balanced amp by using the single-ended Modi as a dac?

I think the biggest selling point of this is the balanced output. I already have balanced cable for my headphones so this would be a perfect buy for me. YES, balanced output has very obvious improvement over single ended.

Any significant benefit to getting the Jotunheim to power the Chord Hugo and have the Hugo simply be a DAC along with it? Since the Hugo is such an amazing DAC/AMP combo, I don't know what it takes and to what price point one needs to go to improve on the experience.

At $499 the Jotunheim gives you a high power fully balanced amp and differential (which they call "balanced, " but is really just 2 built in DAC chips to give you 1 for each channel) DAC. The only close competition I can think of is the Fostex HP-A4BL at $399 which gives you a low power fully balanced amp with non-differential (non-"balanced" single DAC chip) DAC. There also other options like the Aune S6 balanced DAC/Amp for $569 with a built in display, but there are also the $569 Aune S7 Amp and $249 Aune X7S Class A balanced Amp which you could pair with DACs of your choosing. The X7S amp only has unbalanced RCA inputs however.

i would like to know if you use the balanced pre out, do the rca pre outs work as well? or is it just one or the other?

You sound too robotic but still way better than Zeo. Seriously, you didn't waste a second of the video which I really like. I would like you to add a more detailed sonic comparison in the next reviews please.

Today I will receive my Jotunheim and I am looking forward to see how it sounds.

I would like to ask a question about its use.

When I select the DAC mode, can I send the signal from it through the Pre-Out XLR output to another headphone amplifier (like Violetric V200) that has XLR input without conflict problems?

Thank you for this thorough review. A lot of work going in to it, and its appreciated. Sennheiser HD800S comes with choices of single ended and balanced cables. Will the HD800S benefit from the "Schiit Jotunheim"? In other words: How can we set up an AMP that the "HD800S" should benefit with its balanced cable? By the way, Amazon is not selling this, the link doesn't work. Where can this be bought from in the USA?

Will you be able to use the 4-pin Balanced XLR output on any input (Singe Ended, Balanced, DAC)?

Jay: good review. 1 question though - I hear that if you plug in speakers and headphones, both will play at the same time :( is there any accessory that can be used to switch one off and only have the other play?

You don't hear any issues with the sabre dac a.k.a sabre glare? It is quite common with sabre dac implementations (except for things like apogee groove and geek out v2 where they customized certain filters), because of the type of filters they use. The Jotunheim is known to suffer from it. Audio gd NFB 11 also uses sabre dac and gets away from the glare by smearing the treble which however also reduces the resolution in that frequency region.
