Haha the era when 4-3-3 was considered defensive.

You completely missed to cite A.C. Padova, the team that in Italy is really known as the template for 'catenaccio'.
It was that team that allowed Nereo Rocco to gain notoriety and prominence.
He was then hired by AC Milan and won the Champions Cup 1 year later.

Sry for my "eng", but I can't resist.. I hope you understand.
What you call "catenaccio" in Italy It's simply the ability to verticalize the game.. only this.
Italy never has just defended (as some would have you believe to denigrate Italian football) but has always done the "contropiede".
Coincidentally today are called "ripartenze".. counterattack, and no one is ashamed more, maybe someone is tired of never win? LOL
In fact in all our wins (and are not few ... or am I wrong?), We have always been the team that scores more (or in any case among those that scored more).
Some countries like the ball possession (Spain, Portugal and Brasil), others focus on physical strength and technique also (Germany, Argentina.. partially England also).
Others like Italy, as I wrote before, prefer to play speed and verticalize.
But if anyone believes that go the entire football-field with two, three or four ball touches It's something easy, has never played football.
And yet the famous "tiki taka", that like so much, I think it's deadly boring..
The winner is who scores goals.. not the one who has more ball possession.
To use the words of a famous Italian player and team-Chairman:

-La vittoria non è importante... è l'UNICA cosa che conta.
-The victory is not important.. It's the ONLY thing that matters.

italy and austria are the motherlands of the modern football: they presented to the world how a football team could acquire an "energetic defense" football approach with solid defence and a quick fast pace counter attack style of play

what about the role of 'Libero'? was that a part of catenaccio?

Why do you think Conte is dominating the premier league with Chelsea? He resurrected Catenaccio, which was commonplace in Italian football in the 90's (when Conte was a player) and has implemented an upgraded, tweaked take on it in modern times with Juventus, Italy and Chelsea. When done right its hard to beat.

Brilliantly portrayed and explained. Well done co-operating with Jonathan Wilson, and using "Inverting the Pyramid". There are a lot of hidden gems there.

You guys have been doing brilliant work overall, keep it up.

What a great video ! So many more clips for me to see down here. Good knowledge and great form. Maybe one day you could do a video about any Polish footballer or historical Polish successes ? Our national football team is really good recently (for the first time in my life!) and there are many talented players in best leagues now. Greetings from Gdansk !

These are great. What would be ace would be detailed explanations of various niche player roles such as the Libero, Trequartista or Llegada.

Either way, keep up the awesome work!
