Bulletproofing America’s Classrooms

With more than 230 school shootings in the United States over the past decade, and active shooter drills now a routine part of students’ lives, technologies developed to protect soldiers in combat are being adapted and marketed to parents and schools.

One thing they all have in common: high prices ($185 for a bulletproof pencil case, $450 for a hoodie, $60,000 for a shelter), prompting concerns that safety disparities could be exacerbated for low-income families and school districts. Some people see the items as unsettling but prudent; others find them infuriating.

It's good to hear these things to get us all starting to think about the pros and cons.

I still don't understand the objections of Democrats to hardening the security at schools. My kids high school had controlled entrances, security cameras, checkpoints, and more. If anybody ever shows up with a gun, with a push of a button they are locked outside and the cops will be there in 2 minutes. Why can't we do this nationwide?

At this point we just need to exercise our second amendment right for our teachers during the school day

imagine potential victims needing to spend their own money instead of enforcing gun laws

Maybe have to spend hundreds of billions of dollars in schools just to avoid some common sense gun laws

I can't imagine trying to hold a clipboard while a bullet hits it at 2800fps.

This is insane. And for sure not the right way to lose the problem.

Very strange. If an attacker aims your face and fire - how will you save yourself? Tomorrow same companies come and say- purchase our bulletproof helmet for your children. In an attack anyone can get hurt - even experienced commandos, therefore, government of the USA should intervene & stop these companies be fooling people and extracting money in the name of protection. Instead school premises should be properly secured.

1:57 every time a fire risk is identified, or a preventable injury or death is attributed to a lapse in fire code, rules change to make fires less common and less dangerous
nothing is being done to prevent people from getting guns and perpetrating shootings

I hate when people refer to products as “bulletproof” when the correct term is bullet resistant. Not even military grade armour is bulletproof

This morning, I was shocked by the news of suicide cabins (much similar as we see in Futurama) in Switzerland. Now another dystopian news from US....
What will we blindfold next? Our eyes?

Time for abolishment of compulsory education in brick and mortar schools. Free-range learning is the future.
