A powerful 7-point-3 magnitude earthquake struck Japan over the weekend with no tsunamis or fatalities reported.
However, as aftershocks can continue for about a week, residents in the Fukushima prefecture remain fearful, as they remember the nightmare of one of the world's worst nuclear disasters almost a decade ago.
Choi Jeong-yoon reports.
Parts of buildings have been crushed, while the insides of supermarkets are in chaos.
Landslides have swept away highways and closed down Japanese railways, including the Shinkansen Line.
All of this in the wake of the powerful 7-point-3 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on Saturday.
Experts say the earthquake was an aftershock of the devastating 9-point-0 magnitude quake that struck Fukushima prefecture and surrounding areas almost 10 years ago.
That led to a meltdown at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, which left about 19-thousand people dead or missing... and residents are fearful of the nightmare being repeated.
"We haven't had a large earthquake in a while so this was really big. It made me remember the past, when the earthquake hit Japan in 2011."
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga gave assurances that everything is 'normal',... and that there have been no signs of any changes at nuclear facilities.
"There is no concern for tsunamis from the earthquake. Additionally, there has been no reports of any abnormalities at the nuclear plants. Apparently, everything is fine."
Of some 9 prefectures impacted by the earthquake, at least 150 people were injured but zero deaths have been reported.
However, authorities are still on high alert, as more aftershocks could come.
"Please be on the alert for earthquakes for the next week or so...with a maximum intensity of 6-plus on the Japanese scale."
An earthquake of intensity six strength would mean people would have to crawl to move.
Wide cracks could appear on the ground and mountains could be susceptible to massive landslides.
Residents in the most affected areas are advised to pay attention to updated information and be prepared for possible tsunamis.
So far, there have been at least fourteen aftershocks, including a 5-point-2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Fukushima on Sunday.
