Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder: How are mayors of cities with large Sikh populations reacting to claim?

For hundreds of thousands of Canadian Sikhs, the allegation of potential involvement by Indian agents in the murder of a prominent leader has brought anxiety and fear.

On Monday Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there is “credible” evidence that agents of the India government are potentially linked to the killing of a Sikh man and Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, outside a B.C. temple last June.

The Indian government called the accusation “absurd,” and the fallout has since soured trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Nearly 772,000 Sikh people live in Canada, according to government data, making the country home to the second largest Sikh population outside of India, with more than half living in just four cities. The mayors’ responses to the allegations have ranged from urging the federal government to keep people safe to public silence. Global’s Nathaniel Dove has more.

Rather appalling that Canadian news outlets identify Harjeet Singh Nijjar as a Canadian citizen and Sikh leader but do not mention his antecedents, - that he had multiple cases of murder and other criminal acts lodged against him in India, that he aquired Canadian citizenship under rather controversial circumstances, that he had multiple Interpol red corner notices issued against him, that he was in the US No Fly List, that he had been spewing violent threats against India and Indians from his safe haven in Canada.

Who ever is a Canadian who is involved in separatist and/or terrorist activities in country should not have been given such protection by Canadian government.

As an Indian Sikh with a sibling in the Indian navy, 3 cousins in Indian military, 1 in Punjab police, uncountable relatives, friends and neighbours in all spheres of Indian government services, we unequivocally condemn what a handfull terrorists are doing abroad calling themselves sikhs.
