JT, I think Laurence hasn't been back to the UK for a while and his views are predominantly from the last century. My village locals are open all day until 1 or 2 in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays. And from 10 ish in the morning for breakfast, remembering that beer is not just for breakfast! As it says on my T' Shirt.

I'm in Scotland and I don't know of any pubs that close at 11pm. Most are midnight and city centre pubs can be open until 1am, 2am. There are also varying types of pubs. Many city centre pubs offer meals throughout the day but many are dust drinking places. The licensing that allows establishments to stay open all night only seems, for the most part, to be granted for special occasions such as major sporting events. In most cities, if you want to continue drinking after 2am, you need to head for a nightclub. Usually, dark, loud, overpriced drinks and expensive entry fees.

Until 1988 last Orders was 10.30. Extentions were available for holiday resorts on Fridays and Saturdays . 24 hour licences were introduced in 2005.

Pubs which close at 11pm are normally located within residential areas, they close early to reduce noise and antisocial behaviour. Pubs in the city centres stay open until 4am.

Pubs were 24hrs in my town but were mostly empty once the novelty wore off..
They can still open, but don't.

Some pubs in my town used to have 'lock ins' for its regular customers where they would lock the doors to people outside but we could stay there and drink until the morning 😁

Pubs aren't required to close at 11pm.
You can buy alcohol 24/7 - even from petrol stations!

There are even pubs at motorway rest stops!

Most of the Pubs that haven't applied for the late licenses are in areas with a lot of housing so there might be objections from the Neighbours.
All of the City Centre Pubs are opened until at least 2am.

Where I live in the UK, most pubs shut at 11pm (or earlier) simply because no one is there. I don't even know how my local pubs manage to stay open. That said, there is a couple that do stay open past 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. But I do live in a small British town, It's way different in Busy British cities.

its even different in the different countries in the UK. simply buying alcohol in England can happen at any time in the day yet pubs open from 11AM till 11PM. whilst where I stay in Scotland you can only buy alcohol in shops (liquor stores) from 10AM till 10PM

Sidenote, it was 12am in Scotland that Pubs could stay open till (11pm in England and Wales, not sure about Northern Ireland. Source: A former drunkard...me).

The 11pm drinking is decades out of date. There has been 24 hour alcohol licenses available since early 2000s most city center pubs close later than 11 now and nightclubs are open until 2-3am.

My local stays open to midnight Sun -Wednesday, 2am Thurs and 4am Fri & Sat.
You can always then go to a club. These can stay open to 5am, 6am, 7am or later

Britain has had a drinking culture for 1000s of years and pubs are a culture or say a local community and not so much your inner city drinking as that's a totally different type of drinking culture and pubs don't shut till 4am. Also we have a lot of cask conditioned ales that are absolutely fantastic and some are very strong that after 6 pints your knees turn the opposite way round... then we have cider oh the wonderful drink that it is and especially draft stron dry cider thats 8% alcohol and gives you the best night out ever but a hangover that lasts a week! Then working mens clubs are another drinking culture and nothing better than 11am on a Sunday off to the club for 8 pints of LCL a game of bingo watch the strippers then home at 3pm for a massive Sunday lunch and sleep for 2 hours then back out to the club for the night ever..

Correct about pub closing before 2005. Our local used to lock the front door, switch off the outside lights and draw the curtains at 11pm. Meant you had to stumble round to the back door in the dark to get in. However when they did eventually close, the curtains were opened and the lights switched back on so you knew they had stopped serving.

So there's an interesting thing with the extended opening hours. Pubs apply for a licence to open pay 11pm from the local council. The council can put any restrictions they want on granting the licence, or deny it for any reason too. This has been things like making a pub get a renovation first to make the street look nicer to just paying money to a local charity

In Scotland you can’t purchase alcohol from a shop after 10pm
