A lot of people drink at home. Outside of cities, yards are bigger, and people turn their property into entertainment showplaces. We had a beer keg in a refrigerator on our deck. For a brief time we had a volleyball court complete with sand. It was replaced with a bocce court as my Father's gray hairs outnumbered his regular hair. We even hosted pig roasts with a couple hundred people. We call them dinner parties, or game day parties, but generally speaking, it's a few folks gathered to enjoy the day and it may or may not involve drinking.

He is right, we do have dart boards but they are rare and often not used. What we like to play is "Pool"

We do have beers on tap here in the U.S., but again it just depends on the type of bar/restaurant you are in. Also pool is usually the game played in a bar here.

Many of the bars and pubs here in New Orleans are open 24/7 . So much so that some places didn't even have locks on their front doors. That had changed during the pandemic, but the never close idea is coming back strong. So many people do not work a 9am to 5pm shift and they too need a place to wind down after work.

I don’t drink but from 18-30, I went to bars/clubs with friends to socialize & dance. Now everyone is busy with life. If/when we do get a chance to connect, it’s usually at a family restaurant.

Mrs H, when we were younger we did go bars, pubs, taverns. As for watching sports 90% of the time it’s done at home, or at homes of family or friends.

I recently went to a bar. I sat at the bar drinking a Dr. Pepper and eating an amazing hamburger. Then I left. 😂

When I entered military service I was 18 and the drinking age was 21. While I was in the military they would serve me in the club on base, I was still under the State’s legal drinking age. Great video Mrs. H!

The only place I went to a pub every day was in the UK and personally, I loved it. It was so friendly and a ton of fun. I would never go to a bar much here at all. More of an IPA person but when I first had Stella - it was in UK, it wasn’t sold in the US then but now it’s everywhere.

You need to experience a rural country bar in the US. Definitely different then a bar in the city. Grainbelt beer on tap, country music 🙂🤘

The drinking age was 18 for the longest time, but it was increased and tied to Federal monies for highways

When I lived in New England the pub culture was pretty strong. Draft beer, darts, packed with folks from after work to closing time. Moved to the southeast and most of my neighbors have outdoor kitchens and bars. Going to a pub or bar is a special night out.

I work at an Irish pub in Pennsylvania (the owners are from County Mayo) and I can say this: Yes, Yanks drink A LOT! In my youth, I grew up around functioning alcoholic neighbors and it's always been a thing in this area. It's also not uncommon to know people who have multiple DUIs.

I tend to stay home or go to a friends place to drink. Bars, clubs, pubs are just places where one can get into trouble IMHO!

When I was in Vietnam the drinking age was 21, the draft age was 18. You couldn't vote until 21. Then there were several things you could do at 18. You could buy cigarettes, you could be drafted into the military, you could die for your country. But you couldn't drink, except outside of the US. Then after I turned 21 they changed the voting age to 18, but not the drinking age.

Well the first thing is; we don't have pubs in the US. We have bars and clubs.

I don't go as often as I used to before I had kids, but my regular outside of my home drinking spot is a "barcade"--a bar with about 2 dozen vintage standup arcade games and pinball machines. They serve local craft beers and nerd themed cocktails (for example, Spaceballs The Cocktail or It's Dangerous to Go Alone, Drink This!). So I drink cocktails with goofy names and play Gauntlet with my husband, which is pretty great imo.

PS. I absolutely love your shirt!

Mrs. H, I actually go out drinking fairly regularly after work. In the US, we have something called happy hour which has been a thing for decades. It's when u go for a beer either by yourself or with some friends or co workers after work before you go home. Happy hour is usually 5pm-6pm or 7pm. Most people who work in an office work from 8-5. Many bars and restaurants have a happy hour specials and a happy hour menu on drinks and food. The Bay Area has a lot of local microbreweries and have a area with a lot of seating and also serve food and often have TVs showing games. I like to frequent the local microbreweries and gastropubs. Aside from microbreweries and gastropubs, in the US we have pubs/taverns as described by Lawerane. They tend by supposedly Irish or English pubs that also have show sports on TV and have a restaurant portion. Then there are bars that have no food at all or TVs. These are either upscale mixology bars (or Martini bars) or dive bars. A dive bar is opposite of the upscale bar. It's mostly beer instead of mixed drinks and usually it's bottled beer, not draft beer. They also don't take credit card at all, cash only (that's a dead giveaway it's a dive bar, it's cash only). It's also a little rough and usually the stalls in the bathroom don't have doors (I don't know why). These bars are trying to be unpretentious. The different types of bars cater to different groups of people and you usually don't see people crossing over to going to a different kind of bar that caters to a different clientele. Also, California all bars and nightclubs close at 2AM because the sale or alcohol is illegal after 1:30AM whether you go to a convenience store or a bar. In Georgia and New York they don't have a ban on after what time you can buy alcohol. Nightclubs in Atlanta and New York don't close until 5AM and in some cases are open 24 hours a day.
If you and Mr. H, come to the Bay Area sometime, I'll take you to one of the bars I like to frequent. Have a blessed day!
