Thailand has promoted that area as a tourist attraction ever since. More damage was caused by many boats and hordes of tourists. The world is laughing.

375 tourists per hour! I wonder where the damage comes from.

The Company got permission to make the movie and changes by Thai Authorities. What they did was with permission. They owe nothing..
I'd suggest that the poor regulation and enforcement of tourist & boat numbers by TAT have been the cause of the environmental damage over the last 20 odd years.
Always out to blame foreigners for the impacts they cause themselves.. Nice one..

well done!! A film that probably grossed $500 million US pays a fine of $275, 000 …23 years later👍👍

If the proper government agency gave them permission to remove trees at Mya Bay, how can they now be fined, 30 years later. I can’t imagine any other country where that is possible. That said… if Thailand had asked nicely for help at the bay, the movie studio likely would have contributed money just for the good PR… now they will be defensive. Whoever made this decision is an idiot. Thailand should also remember that the movie brought many millions of tourist dollars to Thailand.

I'm very surprised that the government would wait 10 years to file a lawsuit for damages to the island. It doesn't make much sense to me at all. I'm sure they will appeal this lawsuit!

Oh, please!!! 😆 The Thai Tourism Authorities caused A LOT more damage to Maya Bay in the last 20 years, by using it as a cash cow, allowing all sorts of boats to go there with huge crowds, polluting the local waters and severely damaging the reefs.
Now, they pretend it's the fault of the producers of the film "The Beach". Get real!? 🤔

I agree that 22 years after the movie was filmed, that legal action is being pursued. Is there no statute of limitations under Thai law?

Are they also going to fine the producers of the James Bond movie? They literally named the island after ‘Bond!’ 🤷‍♂️

The movie ‘The Beach’ PROMOTED Thailand more than any other ‘project’ I can think of, now they want compensation for damages, you could not make it up guys!! Let’s blame everyone and everything, except ourselves!! 🤔🙏🏻🙏🏻

What a frivolous lawsuit against the filming company are they also responsible for climate change in Thailand.

I don't like movie companies, but they don't owe you any money if YOU destroy YOUR beach AFTER they shot a movie there.

Great job Leo the environmentalist! You helped ruin a pristine environment. Haha. Ironically the movie The Beach is a huge reason I am currently writing this comment from my airb&b in Bangkok lol
