MN v. Derek Chauvin Trial Day 12 - Barry Brodd - Use Of Force Expert

Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, 44, stands trial in the alleged murder of George Floyd, 46. As seen on the footage, the defendant kneeled on the victim’s neck for minutes until after the man became unresponsive during an arrest over an alleged counterfeit $20 bill on May 25, 2020. Jurors must determine under the law if Floyd died because of Chauvin’s actions, or if it was really something else. The medical examiner noted that he also had arteriosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease, and also fentanyl, and evidence of recent meth use.

Both sides jockeyed over evidence amid jury selection. Judge Peter Cahill ruled jurors can hear evidence Chauvin once told another officer in a separate arrest to apply a Hobble restraint–a kind of a restraining belt used by law enforcement–in a “hog-tie” position although a woman allegedly did not put up much resistance. The state can also show evidence that the defendant knew how it was dangerous to kneel on the neck of the prone Floyd.

His testimony only reaffirms those police departments should rethink how to train their officers.

Sounds like this man’s training needs to be re-assessed. If this is indicative of how he trains police officers

He is the epitome of why we have a problem with policing in this country

Experts like this are PRECISELY the reason we have officers remaining employed (and promoted) despite having stacks of complaints for excessive force.

The crowd grew in size, and became more verbal BECAUSE the cop was killing another human being. They would have went about their day if the cops showed any concern that Floyd was dying under his knee

California is embarrassed by this witness.

It wasn’t about them restraining him. It was about continuing to restrain after he had no pulse and did not render aid.

This guy answered smoothly to Nelson. But struggled to answer Prosecutor.

Police departments should test these officers with complaints by setting up a situation to see how they will react & if the same crazy way they should be terminated. This "expert" is crazy. When you have several members of a police department stating this technique is not used & we teach a recovery position, but this expert says to keep them in a prone position there is something wrong.

he gives a lot of excuses and reasons for everything leading up to the death, but not once did they get to the reason to continue to keep him prone and applying pressure to the neck when he was no longer responsive. And percentage wise, this was the majority of the time of the interaction between Flloyd and Chauvin. They just kind of glossed over that huge part entirely by saying, being prone is not a use of force. Well, that force is actually what killed him, so maybe this "expert" should go learn more about human physiology if the actual techniques he teaches to officers can actually kill people.

I am betting that this testimony by the defense is going to irritate the jury who are already hungry and tired.

Kind of scary that this guy with such a long career was instructing officers while able to have the view that Derek Chauvin used the appropriate amount of force. Does anyone notice in his long list of jobs, never once did he mention deescalation tactics. You would think that a use of force expert should also equally be an expert in deescalation techniques.

I respect and understand the techniques used and trained, but I think his still missing the whole point regarding this particular situation ... 3 cops were on him why not pick him up and place somewhere else I mean he was on road, just makes no sense, it still goes back to sheer stupidity negligence of these officers 🤮🤮 I think the defense fked up big time with this witness 🙀
