We don’t talk enough about how beautifully animated princess and the frog actually is. It’s the last and best Disney’s 2d animation has ever been

Lackadaisy shows that 2d animation can still be done and done well

It's funny that I grew up on 2D animation thanks to Disney, but they've left it behind completely.

In Japan, 2D is flourishing brilliantly. The best use of CG in anime shows or films is typically barely noticeable or minimally used.

I think it's especially baffling, that nobody talks about the fact, that Disney promotes Wish as their "celebration of 100 years with a blend of 2D and 3D", while the style is like 90% 3D and the backgrounds may be 2D in some scenes (when ooking at the trailer), while Disneys history consists of around 90% of 2D animation and only 10% of 3D animation.
it just feels off in a way you don't want to see the movie because of this claim and the style it ended up with :/

I think the insistence on 2D being "outdated by 3D" lets the 3D Disney style age way faster than they anticipate (and also: it lets it age at all).
I know artstyles will always develop and let older movies look dated in one way or another, but having 3D in general be regarded as "sick of and kinda outdated" is a stone they threw in their own glass house

2D animation can't seem outdated.
Some animations are just timeless like Disney Renaissance-Era or Dreamworks (example Sinbad: Legend of the seven seas).
2D animation, especially hand drawn, has soul.

We need more 2D films. We need to mix up things for the animated film industry. There are infinite possibilities with drawings instead of 3D models.

Yes please bring it back, I love 3d animation but I love 2d too, we can have the best of both worlds! We don't need to kill one to feed the other, our creativity is big enough for both.

The Christmas movie Klaus was a miracle for 2D animation. Absolutely stunning in every manner. I watch it every Christmas

I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants 2D animation style films to come back!

Not just 2d, but I would *love* to see cel animation again. I know, it's more expensive and time consuming, but there's still a visual difference between hand painted cels and 2d digital. A few years back, I saw Snow White and Beauty and the Beast in 3d, and the way the different layers of animation stood out was incredible, and you only really get that layering with cels. Which isn't to say that I dislike 2d digital, but I'd like a direct human touch to come back to animation, with real inks and paints again.

It's quite sad that studios seem to not want to do traditional 2D anymore and instead use the same 3D aesthetic that we've grown accustomed to for the last decade.

Can't forget how the expressions with 2D made us feel so many emotions, tired of watching sad 3D eyebrows and nothing else, they'll probably never bring back 2D to save time and money, so just appreciate the old authentic and unique masterpieces

Fun fact: originally Disney was going to have it where they would make a pattern of different styles of animated films where one year they would release a 2d film, and a 3D film in the following year. This was changed when The Princess and Frog and Winnie the Pooh didn’t do so well financially.

Note: I would like to note that The Princess and the Frog isn’t the last 2D animated film Disney made, it was Winnie the Pooh back in 2011. But I would like to note that the reason why both movies didn’t do well financially was because Disney didn’t do a good job marketing them, and they were both competing with other films that came out around the same time. The Princess and the Frog was competing against Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakeul and Avatar, Winnie the Pooh was competing against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2.

Am i the only one who thinks Disney desperately needs a second renaissance? the studio's movies no longer feel that sense of creativity Disney used to be associated with and that's pity.

I too love Snow White with all my heart and the fact that it'll have a Live Action reinterpretation is so gross, it feels like modern Disney is ripping apart Walt's work and legacy. i wonder if they're a lost case already. . . Also, thank you for recommending The Reluctant Dragon, that's a movie i definitely need to watch

Agreed!! The sad thing is - they don't even have to ditch 3D animation entirely (you know they don't want to for $) because it's not hard to make 3D look 2D. Anime does this all the time on a much smaller budget

For the record, Walt Disney Pictures last 2D animated movie was Winnie the Pooh in 2011.
But Princess and the Frog does remain to be Disney's last 2D animated princess film...

Regardless of whether they choose to continue with 3D or return to 2D, I really wish Disney would experiment more with its storylines and animation styles. Somehow, I feel as if every single female-led Disney film has the same storyline or a variation thereof. Girl is something/wants something that goes against her family's conventions/expectations. Girl tries and fails to conform to family's standards. Girl goes on a journey of self-discovery and realises how amazing she is. Girl reconciles with her family, who realise the error of their ways and support her life choices. And while that is a great and valuable story in itself, I feel as if it has been done to death. I wish they would try for more variety with their female leads, or with their lead characters in general.

I agree with you. I wish Disney used 3D animation solely for their Pixar projects. There’s no variety in animation anymore.

Shows/movies like Kim Possible, Tarzan, Lilo and Stitch, etc really showed how dynamic 2D animation can be as well as non-Disney shows like Ben 10 and Avatar: The Last Airbender - these projects have some of my favourite animation styles

I feel you, dude. As someone who wants to be an animator myself, I really find traditional animation to be really inspiring and what I want to do the most.

There are other studies with 2D animation like Studio Ghibli, but I do agree that Disney’s at its best with there 2D films, like Princess and The Frog and Atlantis being some of my favorites, and they’re history consists of many amazing animated classics.

And it’s definitely sad that it feels like movies in traditional animation don’t exist anymore. I hope one I would be able to make an animated movie an that style myself, with the help of others, of course.

But there’s still a possibility that Disney and DreamWorks could go back to that animation style one day in the future, hopefully.
