On a scale of sandpaper to a Wii U optical disk edge, how smooth are we talking?

Comparing joysticks to greased spoons on plastic bottles. Peak content.

Product designer here. Self lubricating plastics are a thing (nylon, for example) and if I had to make a wild guess, I imagine the smooth effect here is being achieved by some sort of unusual material selection. Something like a games controller would usually be made from ABS which by default isn't self lubricating but can be made self lubricating with additives. The sticks on the pro controller also have a little line running up the shaft at the top and bottom; this is called a split line and it's where the two halves of the injection mould tool meet. I've always thought they were to blame for a lot of 'crunchiness' on control sticks, so maybe Nintendo have found a new way to manufacture these to eliminate the split line (which would be quite impressive).

Alex... This is internet. We are not talking about positive things. That is not how it works.

It's very interesting that you're pointing this out, I've heard no one outside Nintendo talking about the sticks. In fact, Nintendo mentioned the newly designed sticks in the "Ask the Developer Vol. 16, Nintendo Switch 2 – Chapter 2". They are calling them "smooth-gliding sticks" 😁🤩

already officially talked about this topic at Ask the Developer.
They call it “smooth-gliding sticks.”😂

Thats an interesting way of explaining how smooth the control sticks are. I'm ready to feel this cliam.

Nintendo invents the D-Pad then makes the analog stick for N64, now improves upon it making it super smooth. I hope the stick drift has been solved.

It cannot be two highly polished surfaces as that would do the opposite, like glass on glass creating incredible amounts of friction. It's likely one is slightly textured while the other being smooth, the textured ones having a larger molecular lattice that does not lock itself into smaller molecular lattice of the other surface it's rubbing thus significantly reducing friction.

As a materials physicist, I really enjoyed Alex’s experiments trying to replicate the smoothness of the joysticks

One of the first things I'm actually excited to see is someone do a tear down of the joycons or pro-controller 2 just so we can understand how much (or little) they did to address the drift issue.

Love it that you have Red Dwarf Season One in the background. Didn't know young people were even aware of it. I've been watching it since it first came out in the 80's here in America.

It's amazing how you squeezed almost 10 minutes of that.

I want to come out in huge support of a contrived approximation of a niche feature like this. You didn't hold back even when you knew how bizarre it sounded. Thank you for telling us.

i know exactly what you’re talking about, and it’s part of why i prefer using my dualsense over the switch pro controller.
the sticks on the pro controller does start to feel like they’re really grinding against themselves after having owned it since 2017
