I look poor, so people think I'm secretly rich, but I'm actually just poor.

I am poor. Loooking poor is easy. Surviving as poor isn't. I do try to be grateful, for what I have.

I was mocked for my frugality at work - making my own filter coffee, not wanting to go to expensive restaurants with work colleagues, driving an old car, seeking to cut costs.
Then I retired with enough - and living inner city didn't need, so sold my old car, now walk everywhere for healthy exercise, and my colleagues who mocked me are still working at around 70yo as they told me they cannot afford to retire, while I've been happily retired with more than enough for over 8 years now.

Money doesn’t change people it reveals them. Be comfortable with who you are.

I once visited a friend's house in view of high-rise housing commission blocks. His house looked unkempt and run-down outside with an unkept overgrown garden, so I was stunned inside to see very expensive furnishing and museum-quality expensive pieces everywhere. When I asked why the outside looked so run-down, he said 'so I don't get robbed!' That worked for him.

Another benefit of looking poor that no one talks about is that you blend into society around you. In some cases if you look too rich in poor areas it makes you a target for theft and robberies. I call it wearing poormoflague.

Teaching your children the difference between wants and needs is one of the greatest skills you can teach them.

The richest man I know rarely drives a car, rides a quality, but old, pedal cycle and wears the same blue coat with a tear on the sleeve everyday. At one point, he was thinking about getting a car to save pedalling places over winter, and asked me if I'd sell my scruffy, 25 year old van. I asked him why he wanted it "It's a good size, not too big, it sounds like it runs nicely and I bet it's good on fuel".

Thanks Peter! At 50, I still love being frugal—but I "splurge" on the essentials: a comfy mattress, couch, reading chair, good shoes, and simple quality clothes. Life’s too short for bad sleep or sore feet! For many years we implemented the one item in, two items out rule and are delighted with the few but essential items we use daily 🙂

Looking rich makes you an obvious target for easy marketing.

My neighbours have 3 kids and recently bought a big new smoker they've used twice.

They're in chronic debt. But hey! The smoker in the storage room looks premium.

To make it short: Don’t spend money you don’t own on things you don’t need, in order to impress people you don’t like. 😉

This is exactly what my British in laws taught me. My husband is adopted. They even got turned away one time from looking at property because they looked to poor. They loled all the way home. The hospital my husband worked at as an assistant kind of thing had an instruction video were an old woman is turned away at the door and she thinks "Guess I wont wright that million dollar check anyway". I regularly buy thrift clothes to support the thrift stores I have had to live off when I was young and broke. Now there is a little more security in my life I still do everything I did when I was broke.

There is more than looking rich or poor. There is also looking normal, average or mundane. There is dressing well or dressing badly – which often is not about money. There is style and there is no sense of style. There is dressing to express yourself, to be part of a group or to follow some (unwritten) rules. There is so much more to it than simply black or white.

I find it unpleasant to choose a dogmatic style, I’d rather buy the pieces I favour instead of chasing a look that makes others think I’m either rich or poor.

One advantage of looking poor (but being clean and tidy) is that people in certain places treat you with kindness. You are one of them. I'm not rich, just average, but I look poor. Definitely. I don't wear jewels, my clothes are unbranded, I don't wear make up, don't do my nails and don't wear any perfume. My handbag is self sewn. My clothes are always super clean, though😂.

I see millionaires in my town driving an old truck from the 80s wearing Hawaiian t shirts and basketball shorts. One guy is a famous musician of whom I won't name, and another guy is a higher up in Fedora operating systems who lives in a three story house hidden in the woods.

Rolex's are definitely a flex of upper middle class, but a lot of wealthy guys are content with a Pro Trek/ Casio watch, a Toyota and a solid house with acreage.

I live a modest life, i swim almost everyday in a local public pool in the morning. Someday a fellow swimmer asked me: "¿What do you do for a living?" And add "you can have the luxury to came here everyday"

I just live a modest life, go some places by bicycle, clothing is brandless construction clothing (passive firewall). Cook my own food

I do not have any problem looking poor. I am poor. Problem solved.

I was in the rat race for over 50yrs, always trying to impress people with my business and possessions'. I retired 10yrs ago and sold my top of the range Mercedes, and bought a five year old Honda SUV, now 15yrs old. couldn't care less what people think of me, as long as my wife and I are happy. I am better of now, mentally and financially, but no one would think it with my 3 bed semi house and 15yr old car and boring clothes. In fact I seem to be invisible to other people these days, and that's just how I like it. I realise now that life, and ambitions are futile, as we all end up as dust. The only thing important is to be happy in the moment, until there are no more moments.

I'm constantly mentioned for the fact I have a 16 year old car and no flashy items. When I remind them that my home was paid for in 7 years, that's why I work 2 days a week, and have zero debt, they go grey.
