Part of what makes Alkan so visceral (i reckon) is that his works are proof that he mostly composed in the same way that Bach, Liszt (even Rachmaninov) composed, music that springs directly from improvisation to formal structure. And shorter pieces are less subject to revisions and are therefore less formal and more intuitive, they keep the spirit of the improvisation.

Beautiful, but I wish that better pianists (except Hamelin ofc) had a god at recording these Alkan works, I feel like most recordings dont do him justice

I think that many people enjoy music just as it is; professionals perceive music as a complex structure to be analyzed.
